Meh signing. Could be wrong but doubt he makes much of a difference and would rather the spot go to a young guy to learn since ovi and Backstrom getting up there

If you think he is a 15-20 goal scorer, then you are in for a world of hurt.

How is he not? Easily hits 15 with Washington imo.

Seems like a panic signing for the player. I mean, I get it, better having a contract than not having a contract, but he should have been able to break a million here.

Ugh, as a Pens fan I hate well not hate, it’s only Conor Sheary, but strongly dislike, because that’s a team friendly deal and he’s decent with some nice offense. Would prefer him at $735K (or $1.5M) over a plethora of meh wings on the Pens. This and the Craig Smith signing give me the most heartburn this off-season. I hope he and that POS Tom Wilson can get over this:

Will be interesting how he fits in on Caps- dude needs a certain situation to succeed. Pens had it, Sabres didn’t. He can be a decent mid-6 if the other guys are scorers or play solid D and have some chemistry with Sheary.. but with the Sabres he just looked lost. Ya, offensive talent around him was lacking but he didn’t exactly help there either, and his D game and (lack of) physicality made him look noticeably bad. Not a fan, personally, but there are situations where you just need a guy with a bit of scoring talent and little else.

If he sucks he can be sent down or waived outright. As I said in the Caps board thread, there were other forwards I liked better, but Sheary isn’t a bad option at that price, and it doesn’t preclude them from adding another Vet F if need be, or a vet G.

there is really no downside. So it’s a good move in a vacuum, and a no risk move overall.

Is he going to play in the top 6 like he did with Pittsburgh when he was scoring that many goals?

Either way, good signing for Washington. He plays hard, can fill in for injuries if needed in the top 6. He will net some goals and otherwise be pretty bad.

There's a reason he signed for that.

Now, if you think he is 15-20 goal scorer who falls down alot on his way to that many goals, you're spot on.
He still not getting anywhere close to 20 or even 15 for that matter ... if he plays every game expect 8 to 10 goals and 25 points max.. good wheels still but something is OFF...he struggled mightily even with Sid

Whats the list of ex-penguins who signed with Washington the last couple years

Orpik, Niskanen, Schultz, Hagelin, Sprong, Sheary, Winnik, Chorney, Sill. Who else?
Larry Murphy, Sergei Gonchar, Brent Johnson, Steve Oleksy, Matt Cooke, Eric Fehr...

What’s the point of this exercise? To prove that free agency exists?

I do understand why Pens fans are unfamiliar with this concept though, Caps haven’t had any garbage to trade your GM so we’re obviously off the radar and they’re unfamiliar with how the rest of league acquires talent. I mean most of those guys played for multiple teams, Hagelin and Chorney have played for 4 other teams alone. Winnie played for like half the league. Most teams don’t go out and trade assets for these depth players so I understand your confusion.

I think only Orpik is literally the only player listed who exclusively played for the Pens prior.

Sounds like what the Capitals got out of Connolly, down to doing what Lars Eller doesn't and vice versa.

There’s zero downside to this move. If he produces well at 3RW, it’s a steal of a deal and they’ve replaced what they lost in Connolly. If he doesn’t produce, this is a small enough contract that Sheary can easily be a healthy scratch or even on the taxi squad with no real cap impact.

Not trying to be a jerk but the Caps have signed said players and still finished ahead of the Pens and won a SC more recently with two of those players playing major roles. Maybe they are familiar with them from playing against them so much?
