Well, okay. Apparently Drury was a bad captain for signing a contract which was offered to him.

Can someone explain why this comment keeps getting brought up? Every captain since the invention of sports has at some point given the "we won't dwell on this loss, we'll keep looking forward" comment, yet for some reason when Drury did this board went nuts.

I get that people didn't like the contract (because it was terrible) and wanted more from him, but why is there such a big deal about such a nothing comment?

Because he didn't say that they would get over this and move beyond it as a team. He stated how he personally wasn't going to worry about it. And there's a huge different between the two.

Leetch was pretty horrendous, though Drury made him look like Messier.

I did not like how Drury played as a Ranger, but Leetch was a terrible captain, he didn't want the C, and Leetch was many times downright awful south of the red line from 98 onwards.
