He made that wraparound look too easy tonight.

Also - 54.6% on face-offs this season ... Babcock is doing a great job with him and Willy in this respect, allowing them to learn on their strong sides.
I remember being slightly worried after last year and discussing Matthews journey to become a decent faceoff center. I don't think we see many 8+% improvements in faceoffs from a rookie year to a 2nd year.
Definitely think Babcock has been doing an excellent job with development of him so far.

I really like the changes (really a reinforcement of the rules) to face-offs this year...you need a strong stick and good hand eye coordination now, and all done fair and square, not like the way some centres...like Giroux...cheated so badly in previous years where they just stick their skate into the circle, turn their body even before the puck gets dropped.

Buffalo really screwed us. They give the kid 10.5m even though he has accomplished barely anything. That set the bar right their for Matthews. The market is so weird. Stamkos is getting 8.5 and heres Buffalo throwing cash at a kid who hasn't done anything

yep. and Boston manages to get Pastrnak coming off 34g/70pts in 75 games for 6.67 with Bergeron already locked up for 6.8

guess which team is great and which is awful

what are your thoughts on the numbers he'll put up in his prime (assuming no injuries and he plays a full 82)?

maybe a 10-15% increase from what he is doing now?

Current full season pace is 46g/79pts so maybe 50g/90pts at his peak?

he needs more PP time. 6pts there is beyond ridiculous. Hopefully Bozak is gone this year and babs just rolls Matthews for the whole 2 min pp

Another reason I want Matthews to hit 40 is so he can join the club of players who have hit 40 goals in their rookie year and in their 2nd year in the NHL.

He's the best goal scorer in the league imo. He's going to be the best goal scorer of his generation when it's done

Needs to get it going on the power play. He has its skills and shot package but he is not able to score on the power play. I think we could try switching his position on the powerplay. Once he starts potting goals on the powrrplay I can see him winning a rocket or 2

Matthews will naturally become part of a lot of these types of clubs over his career. It’s just the start.

Why not? His pace would give him 42 goals if he was healthy the whole year.

the person you quoted claims to be a Leaf fan but shits on them all the time , it doesn't surprise me they don't think it can happen, even though he is on pace to score 40 after last night.

I think it will be close in terms of goals, but as long as he doesn't get hurt again I think he can hit 70+ points for sure, and ya with his shot he can hit 40 goals

I don't think he will surpass his first year point total this season. I also don't think he will hit it next year as well once he is made captain and the pressure will be added to his shoulders and the Toronto media up in his face :sarcasm:

Couldn't have happened to a nicer "Leafs-killer" (i.e. Miller) either.

23 of 25 goals by Matthews is 5-vs-5, amazing!

Top 15 even strength goal scorers since Auston entered the league:

1) Matthews 55
2) Tarasenko 48
3) Kucherov 47
4) Grabner 46
5) Kane 45
6) Lee 45
7) Rakell 44
8) McDavid 43
9) Skinner 42
10) Marchand 40
11) Crosby 40
12) Malkin 39
13) Ovechkin 39
14) Marchessault 38
15) Staal 38

Matthews is Usain Bolt-ing the field, while the rest are cluttered together down below.

I had no idea when drafting him that we would draft someone who might become the greatest goal scorer in hockey.
