He'll have a hot streak and end up slightly above PPG IMO. Like 75 in 72 type stuff. Outside of last night, with the team playing faster, it'll help his offence.

This actually goes against conventional wisdom. Teams tighten up down the stretch and as a result last year Matthews produced less during that time. How would he buck the trend?

40 goals will definitely not happen again but 70 points is attainable imo.

He was hot to start the season. Injuy+system daunted him. I expect a hot streak. And the Leafs are scoring more now compared to the 20 games prior.

Good now all we need is the whole narrative that he is McDavid 2.0 to get squashed. He is no more than an Eichel level player or a tad above. It's always been the case at every level and is the same now. Sorry no 14million dollar contracts for you here Matthews and if thats what his camp wants.. Trade him.

Hopefully Leafs can lock up Matthews for 8x8. That's pretty high for two 60pt seasons, assuming he hits 60pts this year but it could very well be in the 50s.

38g/66pts in 72 games.

Matthews likely woulda been close to 45g/75pts if he hadnt missed time

thats beyond silly. Eichel just got 10.5 x 8 and he had zero 60pt seasons and still hasnt hit 25g three years in.

Matthews absolute minimum is 10.5

Matthews is a clear notch above Eichel, especially in 2 way play ans scoring ability. a goal tomorrow and he matches eichels career high...in just 45 games

ouch, that doesn't look good. as for goals, he's on pace for 38.

so 38g-27a-65p vs. 40g-29a-69p.

gpg of 0.53 vs. 0.49

ppg of 0.90 vs. 0.84

there's modest improvement.

that works out to 44g/74pts/+35 over a 82 game season

id say thats a bit more than a modest improvement over 40g/69pts/+2, especially considering his stat line is artificially low due to his hilariously insufficient powerplay time (6 pts this year....Kessel has 33)

what are your thoughts on the numbers he'll put up in his prime (assuming no injuries and he plays a full 82)?

Don't see 40 goals happening considering his missed games. A 40 goal pace should happen though.

I can see him hitting 69 points again though, even with his missed games.

I wouldn't be surprised if he does. he's a lot better this year. His defensive game has improved by leaps and bounds, so I won't feel too bad if he can't get 70 points this year after missing 10 games

Does it matters?
Not like he will sign 8mil x 8 yrs if he doesn't hit those numbers with 10 less games played.

Honestly, would be nice to see him go on a tear heading into the playoffs.

I think he has another one or two hot streaks left in him the rest of the way.

I still think he will have at least one 100 point season (where he scores 50+ goals) and multiple 80 point seasons. With some 90 point seasons sprinkled in. He is still scoring at 0.9 PPG pace this season as a 20 year old.

Conventional wisdom? Bah. With the kind of meme lord Matthews is, I kinda expect him to hit 69 points again because it'll be 'nice'.

If the Leafs low balled him this summer he would just wait until the end of third year to sign. If they tried to low ball him again some other team would offer sheet him. Other GMs will know that the Leafs have stifled his production.

At this point, Matthews is likely an 80+ point player.
We can expect 45 goals and 35 assists with close to elite defensive play(obviously above the Bergeron tier) consistently.

Lol no way. He hasn't even it 70 points yet. And he won't this season.

Maybe if he has not done it by the time he is 25 then maybe we can say he will not be an 80+ point player. He will be an 80+ point player. He is 20 years old and scoring at a 0.9 PPG. In 2 years I expect him to be over a PPG consistently.

Buffalo really screwed us. They give the kid 10.5m even though he has accomplished barely anything. That set the bar right their for Matthews. The market is so weird. Stamkos is getting 8.5 and heres Buffalo throwing cash at a kid who hasn't done anything
