He looked fine. A couple pucks jumped over his stick that cause an end to the offensive zone time and the PP didn't look very good.

I hope Pete tries to pair him up with Greene.

He is going to have to take it from Merrill. Pete sounds pretty intent on letting Merrill getting the first shot at pairing with Greene.

Probably right.

Greene - Larsson
Merrill - Zidlicky

Just makes too much sense.

No one that's fighting for a roster spot tonight, played like they were trying to earn it.

The CBGB line is expendable now. Lost it's luster a whole ago. They're finished, and did nothing tonight to prove they should be playing when the real game start. Time to euthanize them.

Gomez didn't look good either. Was Josefson even in this game? Invisible again.

Boucher was invisible too, but at least he was good on Monday.

Gelinas & Salvador together sounds like bad news.

I'm higher on Gelinas than most. But I still see that pairing as a liability. I really don't want any of the young guys, ripe with offensive talent, to be anchored by Sal's inability to move the puck.

But those other 2 pairings would be ideal... if there were anyone else left but Sal to play alongside Gelinas.

I'll say this, just reading Larsson's body language in person tonight, he didn't look all that confident again.. Flyers were forechecking hard and there were definitely times where he panicked.. But to me he seems like a guy who can refine his game at this level, maybe not so for some other young D on this team

I wouldn't lose aleep if carter didn't get a contract and Bernier was cut with Gio as an extra forward for the 4th line.

JJ really needs to step up and find a way to stand out.

Boucher hurt his chances to make the team out of camp but I'm not worried about him overall. He will stick when his time comes.

Missed this game tonight as I was busy fixing this damn computer.

Anyone care to give me a more detailed synopsis of the game aside from "Gomez sucks" and "Gionta blows"? :D

At least it's preseason...right? right?

My only takeaway from tonight is that the only thing keeping Salvador on this roster is the ridiculous letter on his sweater.

He can't play, period.

I missed 54 minutes of this game... sounds pretty good to me

Throw this one out, see what happens tomorrow night I guess.

Although with 5 of the 7 expected NHL dmen in tonight's game, I wonder who's playing d tomorrow.

hopefully not komisarek!?

my bet is

burlon helgeson,
the russia, and greene
severson and anyone but komisarek

Pete basically said everyone but Cory was bad.

I'm glad to hear it. I thought he would talk about rust and use other such terms. Hopefully some of these turds (CBGB) have hurt their chances of being around every night once the season starts.

Sislo is another who fails to impress me. He's loved by the advanced stats crew, but this guy will never amount to an NHL player. Yeah he's better than Tostitos and possibly even Bernier, but he's NOT an NHL player. He seems like one of these guys who can't finish. That's constantly what I saw when he was up last year.

That and he has that stupid contract. One player we should have moved on from earlier. And heads should roll if he's brought back after this year. The guy is finished and has been for two years. The only use he is of to is the PK, and tonight he looked on the PK like he does at even strength.

Sal needs to be "Matvichucked"

Believe me, he's even worse than the last time we saw Matvichuk.

I'm sure people will make out like he's not that bad, but really he is. And tonight's game doesn't say that, the last two seasons do.

Contract was bad but with one amnesty buyout the right guy was still bought out. We can live with one year of Sal on the bottom pairing and honestly we know he is going to get hurt and lose his spot anyway.

Pete didn't single anyone out and said because the entire team sucked some guys didn't gutter their chances completely but no one helped their cause (believe that part is a quote too) so unless Gomez suddenly finds another gear no way he makes this team. Cbgb going to have trouble too.

Honestly I'm not worried now about Gelly. I never expected him to get fixed overnight. Better to make mistakes now. If he is still lost in his own zone by say December then we can start talking. Preseason games are the times to make mistakes.

what do you do when the guy wears the C ?
let him stay in the line up just to stink up the joint and then have him in the locker room because of his "leadership" ?

You don't cut him in his final year when he is really well liked and potentially poison your locker room.

The mistake was the contract and giving him the C to begin with. Hands are tied after that. Dead cap money and the potential of losing the locker room isn't worth it compared to just letting Sal chill on the third pairing and play the PK for one more year.

Plus they had to keep SOMEBODY that could play on the PK, although I guess you wouldn't know that from tonight. Right now their PK defensemen are Greene-Merrill-Sal-Larsson??? Gelinas sure isn't going to be one and it doesn't make sense running Zidlicky's minutes up even more although I suspect he'll be PK'ing if Merrill's hurt or Larsson sneezes wrong.

Has to be but man Merrill is going to rack up minutes because he is playing the PP too. Getting rid of both just would of been to expensive and odds are we still would of lost Fayne unless Lou overpaid. Fayne comments about the kids coming up pretty much nailed it he didn't think his job was safe here.

Speaking of the PK - and obviously there's not a lot to decipher - but it might be worth noting that Ruutu and Cammalleri were killing penalties tonight. I did not get to watch this in action, but I'm going to trust the NHL box score.

I don't mean to be having my Brian Burke/Team USA moment, shouting "Who is going to be killing penalties?" when the main issue goal scoring. It's definitely not going to be reliable as season's past.

The PK, the young D and the NZ play are the things I'm going to be paying the most attention to during the preseason/start of season.

Ehh I think it will be fine. I still think it's more the system then the players and some of our big kill guys were not playing. There will be hiccups but it will work out.

Our PK has had more then a number of reasons to nose dive over the past two years but hasn't. Won't be tops in the league but will be more then serviceable.
