Better shot? That's a massive understatement Rielly doesn't have a shot at all, Sandin has a bloody rocket on him and adds a massive piece to our PP another threat that teams need to look at to defend. With Rielly on the PP teams just need to glue themselves on to Matthews Marner as Rielly is a non threat. With Sandin they are sprawling from deep transition to high transitions defensively opening lanes for everyone.

Yeah, I guess there is no point debating this...

Rielly having "no shot" and Sandin having a "rocket" is a big hyperbole. PKers are not "sprawling from deep to high transition" anymore than with Rielly on the PK.

I think you're confusing an aggressive PK with one you believe is terrified of a decent point shot.

Even the best point shot in the league doesn't merit PKers throwing themselves out of position to defend as it isn't a high danger play.

That's the point of this thread if we move him how do we make the team better.

That would require either a three team trade or an additional trade for the Leafs beyond moving Rielly out. Any team looking to acquire pending UFA Rielly will likely be a contender just as the Leafs currently are.

There's no point in debating someone who doesn't understand other teams have no respect for us from the point with Rielly out there.

A trade is never going to happen. He is more valuable to us as a rental than in a trade.

If we are moving on from Rielly, we will let him go as a UFA and then sign one of the many high quality defenseman available in his crop to replace him (Jones, Lindholm, etc.).

Sandin is not replacing Rielly.

On the PP? He definitely will if he hasn't already.

You're right. He might turn out to be better than Rielly.

One PP goal is not giving him a job over one of the better PP QB's in the league when not even one game earlier he was beat in a foot race for a game winning shorthanded goal against, was a -2 (0 GF, 2 GA) on the PP in around 10 opportunities on the top PP this season, and at best has looked as dangerous as post-March Rielly on that top unit... Which should not exactly inspire confidence in his PP abilities.

That is disregarding the 18+ minutes of ES time against the best offensive forwards in the world that Sandin is suddenly going to have to handle as well. Sandin gets a fraction of those minutes while mostly starting in the offensive zone against bottom 6 talent.

He will improve, but you are kidding yourself if you think this guy is replacing Rielly anytime soon... At least on a team wanting to compete for a Cup.

Not sure that is really a slight against Rielly. Everyone knows Rielly is not the top defenseman in the NHL, but you have to be pretty damn amazing to be ahead of him.

The fact Sandin stayed out on that top unit after his blunder game 1 goes to show the confidence Keefe has in him on the PP.

He could easily stay on the top unit the remainder of these playoffs if he continues to have success like he did in game 2, which would bode well for him starting there next year as well.

I don't think it's that far fetched.

However, he's not stepping into Rielly's even strength usage just yet.

No one. We keep Rielly at a reasonable cap hit.

We just finally have taken the step and become a good defensive team and a bunch of you want to trade our best defenseman. And yes, he's still our best defenseman. No one else on this team is capable today of stepping into the role Rielly plays

How are you a Leafs fan and don’t realize Muzzin & Holl play the top lines?

How can Rielly's partner not even be on the list when he played with Rielly for pretty much all 5 on 5 minutes? See alot of other pairings on there but no Brodie is really strange.

He was pretty damn brutal this season, but the playoffs are a different animal and i guess Rielly is one of those players than can up their performance and compete level.

I've been very happy with him through 2.

Really? Sandin replacing Mo seems like the most realistic scenario. I think Sandin has all of the tools to be a #1.

Won't happen he took a deal for the team in the last go.

With a flat cap and basically the entire league cap strapped he's not going to have much choice in the matter. He can either stay here on a contender, playing somewhere he loves, or get maybe 500k more on the open market from a team that most likely isn't nearly as good. I'm betting a 1 or 2 year extension at 6 mil or even less.

Having the tools to be one and actually being one though are two very different things. I love Sandin but objectively hasnt proven much of anything at the NHL level yet and we aren't exactly in the place as a team to be rolling the dice on our most important positions

He is out there with either Tavares' line or Matthews' line the vast majority of the game. That means he is usually going up against the top unit or a second unit which is practically as good as the top unit. Sandin is rarely, if ever, purposefully going out against those units.
