Sorokin is 28, by the time this team is competive again after a much needed re-tool or re- build he will be in his early-mid 30s, absolutely pointless to keep him when he will probably get the best return

All the reason to start things sooner. Forwards, especially forwards who are premium athletes, can be players in in draft+2, and solid contributors in draft +3. Look at how many forwards from the 2020 draft are having impacts now. One guy like Cole Perfetti, or Dawson Mercer would mean a lot to this team. Having 2 guys like that would make an enormous difference.

Sorokin’s contract and age is going to limit the best return. Goalies generally do not yield great returns either.
