They said the injury hasn't healed from the Summer as much as they'd hoped.

I still believe he eventually goes under the knife and gets surgery on his hip/groin area to correct whatever is ailing him.

I believe he saw Connor McDavid recover from a partially torn MCL without surgery over 4 months and figured he would try to avoid surgery, too. Just doesn't seem to be working. He clearly isn't himself skating.
