Rent a car, buy a freeway map and get familiar with it. The road system is a numerical soup of 35E, 35W, 20, 30, 45 (a little of it), 360, 820, 121, 114, 183, 635, the Tollway, the Turnpike and more! If you don't have the general idea of what you need, it's really easy to end up halfway across three cities.

Major tourist attractions:
Dealy Plaza/6th Floor Museum: http://www.jfk.org
Dallas Museum of Art: http://www.dallasmuseumofart.org
Fort Worth Zoo: http://www.fortworthzoo.org
Dallas World Aquarium: http://www.dwazoo.com/d
Six Flags over Texas: http://www.sixflags.com/parks/overtexas/index.asp
Fort Worth Stockyards: http://www.fortworthstockyards.org

Seasonal attractions include the State Fair of Texas (late Sept. - early Oct.).

Hockey-related things include:
Dallas Stars (NHL): http://www.dallasstars.com
They play at the American Airlines Center: http://www.americanairlinescenter.com
They practice (usually open practice with autographs available afterwards) in Frisco at: http://www.drpepperstarcenter.com
Texas Tornado (NAHL): http://texastornado.pointstreaksites.com
Allen Americans (CHL): http://www.allenamericans.com
Texas Brahmas (CHL): http://www.brahmas.com

Major airports include:
DFW International: http://www.dfwairport.com
DFW is located about 25 minutes away from downtown Dallas and Forth Worth (each a different direction). Has most of the major carriers and big international flights. Big American Airlines hub. Tends to be more expensive to fly into.
Dallas Love Field: http://www.dallas-lovefield.com
Smaller regional airport about 10 minutes away from downtown Dallas, much further away from Fort Worth. Has United and Southwest. Southwest flights can be very cheap depending on where you fly from. Older than DFW, less airport-type amenities in the direct vicinity.

Questions about Dallas

Hi, I posted this in last night's GDT, but didn't get any replies -- re-posting, hope you don't mind, thanks.

coming this weekend for big game, couple Qs i was wondering if you could help out with.

Whats the best Steakhouse for Saturday night?
currently have a reservation at JRs in Arlington, but not sure how great it is. I hear Bobs is up there, Capitol Grille too (though that's a chain, been to the one in Nashville.) ..How about Silverfox?

Also, want to play golf Saturday -- but is the weather going to blow that plan out? It's supposed to be 50+ then, but brutal today, right? So will the courses be icy Sat still?
Considering these 3 courses, any advice/comments -- Buffalo Creek, Tiere Verde, Golf Club at the Resort.

Staying in Arlington,
thanks

GL to the Stars the rest of the way

Fogo De Chao or Trulucks for steakhouse.

thanks
I've had Fogo in LA ..it's a chain, Brazilian style, right?
I figured Dallas would be a great place for home grown steakhouses, but the top rated ones all seem to be chains (Capitol Grille, Mortons, Ruths Chris, etc...) Bit disappointing

Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse
III Forks
Nick & Sams
Chamberlains

Lawry's Prime Rib (if you like Prime Rib)

I would recommend Del Frisco's. Best meal I've ever had.
Most of these restaurants are on or near North Dallas Tollway (Del Frisco, Lawry's, and III Forks. Chamberlains is about two blocks off the tollway) Nick & Sams is on McKinney Ave. Just North of downtown Dallas. I would NOT suggest capital grille. I have never been to JR's and Silver Fox is good but I prefer III Forks, they are similar (same proprietor) Bob's is quality too though. Trulucks also good as Cin said. I am not a huge churriscaria fan so I wouldn't choose Fogo or Texas de Brazil or anything like that but that is preference.

I hope that helps. Enjoy Dallas' greatest

the "homegrown" places are not within the same style of the 4-5 star places you mentioned imo.

As I don't go to the III Forks / Nick & Sam's / Pappas Bros places often, couldn't tell you which to try.

Can't go wrong with Bob's IMHO and if you are looking for a great burger for lunch go to Twisted Root.

Whats the best Steakhouse for Saturday night?

Al Biernat's (endorsed once by Phillippe Boucher) or Bob's

Also, want to play golf Saturday -- but is the weather going to blow that plan out? It's supposed to be 50+ then, but brutal today, right? So will the courses be icy Sat still?

It might be rainy on Saturday...do check. It's definitely horrible today.

JRs in Arlington?
What's the address on that?

I go to the Keg in Arlington on occasion, but looking at Google, see JRs is in Colleyville (Grapevine basically).

Also no offense, we all have different tastes, but if you're in TX - are you limiting yourself to steakhouses? I think of TX as more of a Mexican, Tex-Mex, and BBQ place as far as dining goes.

thanks all for the replies!
was trying Bob's, but it's pretty packed that night
will likely stick with JRs

this was NYT thing...

The Mansion on Turtle Creek is where Belfour was at when he was arrested, so you know it's good. :)

Question about tickets

Hey guys, I'm moving to Dallas next year for college, so I'll obviously be a bit tight on money being a college kid.

I've been doing a bit of research on tickets, (as I'd like to go to every stars game that I can, I am a somewhat new fan, but I've fallen massively in love.), and I saw that the "East Terrace" tickets are going to be about the only thing that are consistently affordable for me.

My question: How good are these seats? Obviously not the best in the house, but are they still manageable? Prices I've seen, especially on stubhub, etc. make me cautious about the quality. Thanks guys.

Edit: The priority terrace are also affordable, how are those?

Student rush was made for kids like you. Last rules I'm aware of is the tickets are released an hour before the game (though for some low-sale games they are sold earlier), $10 for upper bowl, $25 for lower bowl.

Can't buy them in advance but they're great deals.

What does the "upper bowl" consist of. If I'm at the line every night waiting for these, will there be any problem consistently getting them? Is it every night?

Sorry for so many questions, but this definitely seems like a good thing.

Sweet! That seems like it will for sure be reliable for games that are less popular.

How are the other seats I mentioned for games that I might not be able to get into 1 hour in advance, though? (Against rivals, etc.)

I've taken advantage of student rush many times, well worth it. I am sad that I'll have to pay full next season as I'll be graduating. Definitely going to be hitting it up during my spring break.

you should be able to get tickets to just about any game. I have never been turned away as long as I arrived at 6:45 for a 7:30 drop. I have seen plenty of more popular games such as NYR, SJ, MTL, and DET to name a few. I wouldn't think that would that big of a problem. The bigger the group you go with the earlier you should arrive, harder to seat groups of 6 rather than 3-4. Welcome to the boards!

Thanks mate! Glad to be here.

Yeah, I probably won't need more than 2 tickets at most moments, so as long as there's a seat open at all, I should be fine. Not many of my friends are as hardcore of hockey fans lately as I have been, hence why I joined here to talk about hockey :).

Good to know there are some really helpful people on here, I look forward to talking to you all in the future.
