i guess you have to look at it like this. the 1st rounder will be one of the last 1st round picks..... and they dont usually generate into anything. so I see why vegas did it. now they have 3 solid lines. wow. i like it tbh

Tatar is under contract for the following three seasons after this one (5.3 AAV), and is good for 20-25 goals. The only downside is that it might put them in bind (financially) in a few years. But this a good move for right now.

Wasn't expecting Tatar to be traded so soon, but 1st, 2nd, 3rd is a cancan't pass up deal. Now we just have to actually draft players.

problem is the vegas 1st rounder will be like 30th. and how many good players come out that high? if this was a top 15 pick maybe I'd think its an overpayment but now vegas has 3 solid lines on a pick they didn't need anyways

Hopefully Vegas misses the WCFs (No offense, guys) and Detroit can package something to move that pick up near the 20 marker.

Keep in mind that Tatar would be the 9th forward signed past this year. Seems like a lot to give up, but he's a top 6er signed long term and they have loads of picks.

Agreed. I always liked Tatar over Nyquist. I think he plays with more tenacity, in spite of his boneheaded turnovers at times.

But they got a good haul for him.

A 2nd next year and a 3rd three years from now is more like a typical 3rd and a 6th or 7th, and the 1st will be chosen shortly before the 2nd round starts I think. Some people are cheap. This was a decent deal that didn’t put Vegas out for the future but still recognized they’ve got a real shot this year.

Went all in on a replacement for Brendan Leipsic...

I do believe Tatar succeeds in Vegas, but for now I say Detroit wins the trade considering what they got for him.

And we have a winner for the most overpaid player at this year's deadline (though Hartman comes close)

Looks like they were after Karlsson and then made a bit of a panic move here.

Huge overpay. I wanted Grabner and he would have been cheaper to acquire. Or stastny as Vegas desperately needs a 3C. All of these new to hockey vgk fans crowned GMGM too early. Yes Tatar should make the team better but they could have had better for less. McDonough would have also improved the team more. Winger is one position Vegas didn't need to acquire.

The second being next year is positive for Detroit not a negative. What are the chances of Vegas repeating this years results? I'll gamble on that being a better pick next year.

My thoughts exactly. They never would've gotten Ottawa's 2nd for Smith if NYR had known how bad Ottawa was gonna be. When you're dealing with a team in the current place Vegas is in, it's better to hold that off until the next year.
