The league should look into selling packages of other networks games to non NHL markets(basically on nights that don't interfere with NBC sports) even if it's just a case of CBC coverage on Saturday nights for places like Washington or Mississippi

CenterIce  That's how I watch all of my games. There are very few places in the country that aren't currently in an NHL network though so there's no real need to cater to them. Presumably a Seattle team will take over broadcasting to this region at some point but who knows when that will happen. Vegas might try to sell broadcasting to ROOT NW in the interim but I'm not sure of the complexities of extending the region down into Nevada.

Vegas' assigned secondary market is a huge swath of land, We've got all of Utah, pretty much the whole southern part of the San Joaquin Valley, Montana, Idaho, and I think the northwest part of Arizona.

It's why I'd always assumed Root would be in the running for the Knights rights.

Going with local affiliates doesn't really monetize the secondary areas, and it certainly doesn't create more Knights fans out of areas that are likely filled with people following Denver sports.

The first thing that came to my mind when they announced the Vegas market was Root Sports. It's like the market was almost designed for Root. Perhaps it was and Root is using that to its advantage and squeezing a little since they're the only real RSN in a position to cover the majority of the area.

Huge and also for the most part unpopulated.

I think in the end Foley will sign with FOX West and there will be no hard blackout with the Kings and Ducks and in return the Knights will have some games shown in SoCal. But he is looking at $15M a year max.

Most visitors to Vegas have no idea at how isolated the city is. 30 miles away from the Strip you might as well be on the Moon.

That isn't allowed...

I'm SURPRISED that the Kings HAVEN'T hooked up with Spectrum Sportsnet, SINCE it's a similar arrangement between the Galaxy/Lakers(not sure if the Clippers use Fox West/Prime Ticket) since it's a shared venue, per se.....

the Ducks use FS West/Prime more NOW THAT THERE'S THAT 3RD network....

IIRC, Kings/Ducks have Nevada as part of their "territory", or at least the southern part. Sharks may have the northern part, plus Oregon and maybe Washington.

The Kings just signed a long TV deal with FOX after their 1st Cup.

But that territory would be redrawn upon a new teams entry. Highly doubt people in Vegas are going to get 3 team's games on standard cable.

Wouldn't the local tv companies be doing their due diligence in vetting what the corporate community is going to pay for advertising for them to make money from buying the tv rights of the Knights?

Is the Raiders arrival in the coming years having an impact as those corporate dollars are being saved to go towards the Raiders.

Still, I doubt it affects the local TV, since all Raider games will be on national channels.

But that "territory" would be redrawn upon a new team entering.

Anyway, isn't there a limit of 50 miles to what teams CAN CLAIM as their territory ?

Vegas will rely a lot on visitors to fill the seats in the arena. However, visitors will not be watching the games on TV in large numbers. Furthermore, the Casinos are open at all hours and thus the city is not all 9 to 5ers. I am curious to see how many locals will tune in to hockey broadcasts.

This myth needs to die. Their season ticket numbers are crazy high and they have long term commitments. You'll have certain games that are road heavy (Kings, Hawks, Sharks) just as Nashville does, but most games will be filled with home fans for the most part.

Many of the season ticket holders are probably casinos and businesses that distribute the tickets to visitors.

Casinos wouldn't want people going to the games...their goal is to keep people on their properties. Why would the Caesars Group send someone down the street into MGM territory?

lets try to add up some numbers for LV GK:

"Sponsorship spending on the National Hockey League and the league's 30 clubs is expected to total $447 million in the 2014-2015 season"

National TV money is 200 million from NBC, 400 million (american) Rogers, lets say 200 million TVA Sports and overseas deals. (25 million each team)

Lets say each team does 20 million each in merchandise. Gate is 17000 x 65 x 41= 45 million (including suites, parking, concessions)

14 million + 45 million+ 25 million= 84 million

Their costs would have to be 114 million in year one if they are going to lose 30 million and that is impossible.

I think expenses can be quite high no? Players and Coaching, Management trainers etc would be $80m or more in just salary contracts. Then operating and travel expenses must be multiple millions.

The NHL can make whatever rules they want when they sell TV rights

They came to an agreement with NBC air games nationally, and they have agreements with cable/satelite providers to market and sell Center Ice (as well as with MLBAM to market/sell NHL.TV digitally), they can't just retroactively air games in certain markets.

Each NFL team sells local rights to a local OTA station. That station broadcasts the team's preseason games that are not broadcast nationally and simulcasts any games of fans hat team that would otherwise only be available on cable or satellite.

Anyway, isn't there a limit of 50 miles to what teams CAN CLAIM as their territory ?

That's the area a team controls in regards to NHL games physically being played there. TV territories are worked out in conjunction with the NHL and can overlap.

It's still a draw... especially for us Canucks. Gamble? Hmm maybe... gamble and leafs game? Sounds like a worthwhile vacation to me. I find it very hard to believe Casinos wouldn't be all over these tickets.

IIRC, the Sharks had to BUY TV air time the first few seasons (and not all the games in the whole season).

But this was before a major increase in cable companies needing content. Especially local TV Stations (which are almost like the extinct dodo).

Why not sign with spectrum cable LA? They're new right?

The problem with that is Lakers games would have priority. Based on my experiences as a Ducks/Lakers fan, there will be 25+ Knights games minimum that are going on at the same times as Lakers games. What do you do with all those Knights games?

Also I don't think Cox which is the biggest cable company in Southern Nevada even gets Spectrum Sportsnet.

Once again, the point of the article is the numbers of the said TV deal, specifically the amount being offered.

I still don't understand how anyone can be surprised that Vegas got $10M or less offers for a TV deal. After all it's for a team that never existed up until now and that only exists on paper until the expansion draft.

What we can conclude is that they got multiple offers but were expecting bigger numbers. Surprising ? Not at all. Foley who just paid $500M was expecting to see money coming in, partially from a TV deal. And if you ask NHL, every NHL local TV rights are worth as much as the NFL national rights.
