Even not including this season, under other PP configurations Morrissey's numbers on the PP have never been great. The Jets generate fewers shots and lower quality of shots with him on the PP than other d-men:

Stanley has a big booming shot, I would like to see what he can do, if not put Pionk up there. If that unit is going to get a higher usage it should have our current best PP pointman, which is Pionk (or do something crazy like running a 5 forward unit).

I mean that couldn't possibly be because our pp configuration up until this year was designed based on having a right dmen on the pp.

Of course when you add another right shot as a one timer option for Wheeler to tee up the numbers will look better.

It doesn't matter who the pp point man is on pp number 1 this year and if they have a great shot if Scheifele (the pp qb) can't tee them up for a one timer.

Couldn’t agree more with this reasoning. The only concern with ice time, in my view, is too much for your top players. There’s no reason to play Scheifele 26+ mins. Ever. If you have 9 players capable of excelling with ~20 mins, then play them and dominate the 4th lines of teams with lesser forward groups.

Top line players may do more with less minutes. Buff looked awful at 27 mins per game, and a lot better at 22 or so. We don't know what that number is for our top line forwards, but I would rather see Connor and Wheeler skate harder on offense and backcheck with lesser minutes. Reduced minutes and shorter shifts seems to be helping them, so I see no reason why any of our forwards should be out for 20+ minutes per game (special teams fest aside). Our 4th line handles itself just fine, but Gus at 4:38 per game is probably one of the lowest TOI/game stats across the league.

Beaulieu wasn't bad.

He's obviously not a top pair guy but I think he's done really well subbing up. Last night he did throw the puck away a bit more than the game before. I think that Demelo should be pushing his way back up there as he's looked to really get back into game shape.

This Beaulieu is terrible meme is tired.

Please don't @ me with a bunch of stats that have been proven to be imperfect at best.
My comment was about Beaulieu failing up...

He was a disaster in his last game with Stanley, and the Jets were eaten alive with him on the ice.

Shot attempts were 20-6 in favour of Calgary. His xGoals percentage was 5.38%. He was 2nd in even strength ice time in that one (16:43), playing 2:30 more than Morrissey and 3:00 more than DeMelo.

He was rewarded with a slot on the 1st pair.

Fast forward to his first game with Morrissey, where he posts 40.38% xGoals (2nd worst on the team), and played 17:22 at 5 on 5, a full minute more than Morrissey, and 4 minutes more than DeMelo.

And then there's last night, where he led the Jets in 5 on 5 ice time with 17:25. He delivered an xGoals % of 32.6.

5 on 5 ice time last night:
Beaulieu, 17:25
Pionk, 15:49.
Forbort, 15.16.
Morrissey, 15:12.
Stanley, 14:18.
DeMelo, 11:28.

By the numbers, he's been Morrissey's worst partner and the only defender with worse Corsi or xGoals numbers this season is Niku.

This isn't a meme about how bad he is, it is me questioning why he's being deployed like he's playing great. His results have gotten worse and his ice time is climbing. I don't get it.

What's this fascination with rolling 4 lines equally? Icetime is a zero-sum game. If the 4th line is getting equal icetime, then it means your top-9 are getting less. Why would we want guys who put up 2+ points/60 to play less in favor of guys that put up 1.5 points/60. Playing Lowry on the 4th line and giving them "equal" time also means giving Trevor Lewis equal time.

What is our top line...?

Seems Lowry's is right now...

You add PLD... he has chemistry with whoever... then what... ?

Chef gets whatever wingers and gets his mojo back... then what... ?

Stastny gets matchups more favorable with better wingers... then what... ?

Trevor Lewis can be a winger with Chef, PLD or Stastny... that's what....

Stastny, Chef, Lowry and PLD are all excellent centers... centers add to the 200 foot support game... and that is a treasured skill throughout the NHL... now we have 4 centers of quality...

We have had an abundance of good wingers... that hasn't changed so now we can roll with them...

I'm not thinking like it's a month ago... with PLD added we can now keep the tempo up... full court press the opposition all game... short shifts... keep everyone fresh... etc. etc.

Lewis should not be a center in our new scenario...

I really don't like all these massive breaks early in the season. The obvious prediction is a more condensed schedule toward the end, and we're using up all the potential "buffer" days now. If we get a mini series delayed it's going to be madness to make up the time!

I think we'd be better off giving Stastny the 4th line role. You can matchup Lowry against anyone. Stastny-Lewis would be a vet line with real hard nosed experienced vets. Put Harkins on the wing, and he's just got to play a simple straight line speed game.

One of my favourite plays last night was Stastny wrecking the Flames player on the backcheck on the broken PP. Basically from the blueline on said you're not going to beat me no matter what. He doesn't have the wheels anymore, but when you have the smarts he does, you can prolong your career.

Stastny is wasted on the 4th line. The way he has been playing, so is Lowry. Wheeler is the one who needs to drop down to the 3rd line.

Considering what has happened to LHD when they get paired with Morrissey so far this year, it doesn't look good for him.

I agree that Stastny on the 4th is not a good idea.
That is why I think assumptions that he will play wing are most likely.
Wheeler doesn't seem to be playing physically at all so adding him to the 3rd could potentially neuter that lines effectiveness.

Since Lowry is going to take a top matchup and since Wheeler needs to be kept off our top line and away from Scheifele then that leaves the 2nd line. Maurice has shown a tendency to shelter a scoring 2nd line (see Laine).

Seems like that's where he needs to be.

At some point injuries will force changes to any of these plans.
My guess is Maurice tries Stastny on the wing in the top 6 before he goes to a balanced 4 line attack.

I think that 2nd line is the de-facto 3rd line though. In reality, it's apples versus oranges anyway.

The "2nd" line gets sheltered minutes mostly. Whenever possible Maurice has the Scheifele/Lowry line against the other team's top 2 lines and put the Statsny line out against an easier matchup. That makes more sense now with Copp on that top line. If anything, we don't want Wheeler on the 3rd line, because it likely ruins that idea.

I know some will make the argument that Wheeler should be on the 4th line, but we all know that's not realistic. Therefore the lines as currently structured make the most sense based on matching up against the other team in my opinion.

Of course with PLD coming in, who knows what will happen. I would put PLD in Stastny's spot and Stastny in Perreault, but am intrigued at an unrealistic situation where Statsny stays at center and each line gets >12 minutes.

Beaulieu has played a significant portion of his career on his weak side. There actually been many posts over the years that have discussed his overall numbers would be better if not always forced by injuries to his weak side.

We saw last season he can be a valuable player when playing LD and it should be no surprise being paired with Stanley is far from optimal. There's only two other options, both of which are going to include heavy minutes.

Further, clearly something is up with Demelo as he's not presently not playing at a "coaches porn"level.

Providing Beaulieu doesn't get injured in practice, his next game will have him meeting expansion criteria after which the Jets have checked that box and allow Maurice to ice Heinola on his weak side. With Nathan only needing a single game, perhaps Ville gets in as early as Tuesday and joins Dubois.

Beaulieu was fine with Stanley on average. It was just their last game that got ugly.

And while I'll admit DeMelo hasn't been his usual self, he's still put up better results than Morrissey or Beaulieu.

The coach love Beaulieu for whatever reason. I don't see him for Heinola any time soon. It would leave Mo without his PK/fighter guy, and that just won't happen.

Why exactly where Morrissey and DeMelo broken up anyhow, they had a 50 plus % XGF whereas DeMelo has struggled with Stanley to the tune of a low 30's XGF% and Morrissey playing on his offside has not been nearly as effective with Beau (Which shouldn't surprise anyone).

I just don't get it.

I don't think it makes sense to put Dubois at LW and it also doesn't make sense to put Stastny there. We don't need help at LW. RW is where we need help. Scheifele is the only centre who shoots right handed. If we are going to put one of the centres on a wing, Scheifele is the one.

I think that people will have a hard time accepting that, but I think it just works.
Connor - PLD - Scheif
Copp - Stastny - Ehlers
Perreault - Lowry - Wheeler
Harkins/Vesalainen - Lewis - Appleton
And there could be an argument to swap Apples and Wheeler. Wheeler should be able to play as well there as Roslovic did. Mau may not be able to use the Lowry line against opposing 2nd lines so much.

Those are 4 very good lines.

Yeah I am not sure what the plan will be once Beau gets his games. Moe might want to put Poolman back with Morrissey.

Beaulieu must be pretty close to having his games. How many does he need this year? The requirement must have been prorated for the shortened season, really 2 seasons.

Roslovic could be good, but the Jets aren't going to miss him on this roster, much. And Appleton has less than half the cap hit that Roslovic has.
__________________________________________________

Roslovic was a player, that somewhat baffled me, as I was 70- 30 on him -70% in favour of him turning out to be a solid top 6 player. I liked his speed, and he had a great shot. He lacked a key ingredient - "confidence" and maybe smarts.

However 30 % of me thought he was like our smooth skating Russian player Burmistrov, who did not have any hockey IQ. I thought Roslovic could possibly go that way, but I don't think so. He'll be pretty good.

It's tough for young players breaking into the league playing for the Jets, as Maurice doesn't give them a fair shot IMO. Now with HF Boards breathing down Maurice's back, he's starting to shuffle up the lines, and you can see the difference in Copp and Appleton's play. ( good)

Let's not let ourselves run away with our excitement over Helle.

At this point in their respective careers their differences are only measured in single digits:

1 vezina: 0 vezina.

Difference remains one, temper your enthusiasm.
