Lhd/ rhd is wayyyyyyyyy overblown. Its really not that big a deal
A lot of d-men see significant drops in performance when playing on their off-side. It is a big deal.

@Daisy Jane has made a good point before though. We shouldn't be staring ourselves blind on RHDs. We should look for whoever is the best choice on that side. It might be a RHD, it might be a LHD who is better than most on the right side, and it might be a LHD who sees a drop on his off-side but is so damn good that he's still the best choice.

Except it isn't just Babcock, it's becoming the norm in the NHL these days. So whom to believe, those professionals at the highest level of the sport, or random dude who can't spell, or put together proper sentences on the internet?

Quantifying The Importance of Handedness
The last of the three aforementioned skills (advancing the puck), is one that would seem to be effected the most by handedness (in theory). If a left or right handed defenseman plays on their appropriate side of the ice, they will be much better suited to use their body to protect the puck when in possession and also pick up pucks behind the net on their strong hand, allowing them to start the breakout with a forehand pass.

when he comes back he needs to play the occasional pp shift imo, get his scoring and confidence up.
He also needs to be a better skater to put up points in the league. Not that its bad it just doesn't stand out which sucks for a player of his size.

okay this is true.
but if Babcock didn't make it such a thing for team Canada - is it talked about? hand to heart, i never heard it being a thing before Team Canada, and that's all you hear about now since then.

(Oh and the 24/7 hit with Babcock)

I don't know how much it was talked about before that... somewhat for sure, but it wasn't as much of a thing as it is now.... but then, Studying advanced stats, and why things work etc, wasn't so much of a big deal either. The game and technology marches forward.

Since Dermott has entered the league he's been one of the most effective Dman in the league. He faces low QoC but he also has just as low QoT, and in general QoT is usually more significant.

yeah, he's playing with Polak (now a rookie from Russia) and 4th liners against mostly 4th liners. in theory it shouldn't be a massive problem for him to play with someone like Gardiner and good forwards against 2nd liners at this point

Great Pickup in the 2nd Round by Mark Hunter. One of his biggest contributions during his short stint with the team.
