Seriously though, I don't know why everyone has a hard-on for our defensemen in Albany. "zomg dont trade gelinas."

WE HAVE NO SPACE ON THE NHL ROSTER. THEY ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE A FUTURE IN NEW JERSEY.

These guys have nowhere to play. I don't care how many points they have, there's no room for them. And there won't be room next year, either. These guys won't get qualified or will refuse to sign, and then we've lost assets that we've spent years investing in.

Even if ONE of these guys, by some miracle DOES make the team....we don't need to hold on to the others. You could make the argument that they make Albany better, but Albany is terrible even with them.

Gelinas/Urbom/Burlon are all interchangeable to me and I'd move any of them in a heartbeat with no hesitation. The only prospects I won't entertain moving are Merrill, Boucher, Matteau, and the goalies. I'd be reluctant to move Severson but would do it if I had to.

Of course, this changes if we ship out some defense, but we all know how much Lou loves having surplus defensemen.

Of our 8 D-men, 2 are UFA's and 2 have been discussed as amnesty possibilities.

We're not going to have the same defense next year, and trades are part of the business. I'd be willing to deal any D prospect except Merrill and Gelinas without hesitation. Gelinas could very easily be on the roster next season, but I'd move him for the right piece. Merrill I wouldn't move under any realistic circumstance.

Briere is a defensively liability. Every postseason he raises his offensive game but his defensive game plummets. Not the best stat to use, but he's a minus player seemingly every postseason.

22 points in 22 games last 2 playoffs, yet is still a -13 despite 12 ES goals.

Well last years football scores between both losers from Pennsylvania didn't help anyone in the +/- stat departement... that's for sure ;)

I'd still take him on our team any day of the week, knowing that we're a responsible team in all 3 zones. If we made Kovy the player he is today, we can do the same with just about anyone IMO.

I think Gélinas has more potential then any of our prospects blueliners. I'd move Merrill before I'd touch Gélinas since we know what EG can give us at the pro level where as Merrill is still a question mark both on and off the ice.

Regarding the rest, I'd move Urbom/Burlon and just about anyone to get the player we need to go as far as possible in the postseason, outside of Josefson and Gélinas that is.

Why? Do they have a bad history or something?

I don't think so. It just seems like something he wouldn't do, but I'd welcome it.

As far as Albany D men go I don't think I wanna get rid of Gelinas. Though I could get comfortable for the right return. Hoping also that the return wouldn't be just a rental. Urbom, Burlon, I could care less about those guys. Not very high on them though I'm not low on Urbom particularly either.

Think we need to keep hold of Gelinas and Merrill. If needed trading one of them wouldn't worry me. But you have to consider the age of our D group and that we have two FA this summer. Rather trade Tallinder and give Gelinas a chance. Getting younger on D would be nice. From what I can see everyone complains about how slow out team is, especially on D.

Gelinas would provide speed and offense and a hard shot from the point. Which is pretty much what everyone on here is saying we lack on D. I'd rather build from within than trade for some old geezer.

Salvador is not going to be bought out, period. You don't give a guy a big extension, name him captain, and then buy him out in the same calendar years.

Volchenkov likely won't get bought out either. He's an important part of our PK, our goalies rave about him, Pete uses him a lot, and he's a very useful player when his ice time is properly managed.

We're not spending to the cap anytime soon so salary won't be an issue.

Even if someone makes the team next year it'll be as a 7th defenseman getting sheltered minutes or sitting in the press box. And if we do move someone and have an opening, great, we still have three defensemen stagnating on an awful farm team (Merrill is surely going pro this summer) getting closer to free agency every day.

Why do we need 3 goalie prospects when we can only start 2?

Beause goaltenders take much longer to develop and have a much higher potential to bust, even late in their careers. And all of them except Frazee are unproven at the pro level, unlike our defensemen who are NHL ready but have nowhere to go.

Zidlicky and Harrold are FA's, I don't really expect either to re-sign, then again I didn't expect Sal or Harrold to come back this year. You can always move Tallinder if you have to clear another spot although with the way he's been thrown out with the trash this year I worry Fayne'll be the one to hit the road eventually.

There is eventually going to be room for 'some' of the Albany/college guys. Not all of them - why they need to deal an Urbom probably sooner or later among others, but I suspect Gelinas as an offensive defenseman is one we'd want to keep. Especially since our only other true offensive defenseman (as of now) is 36 and a FA.

Stewart is the hottest player in the league at the moment. He`s playing his butt off to get a contract extension in St.Louis.

I was talking Tallinder, not Salvador.

And I agree with what your saying. I'm just saying that we're not going to be icing the same 8-man unit next season, so it's entirely possible Gelinas and/or Urbom have a chance to make the NHL squad next year.

Personally I'm expecting Zidlicky, Harrold and Tallinder to all be else where.

I think Lou will work some Providence magic to keep Fayne here.

I could definitely see Volchenkov getting bought out, but it probably won't be this year. I'm thinking there is a better chance of it happening next year in the Summer of 2014.

It's not because he's a terrible player, but he just isn't worth that money.

I dunno, with the emergence of Loki and the ghost act parise did most of the playoffs I still feel good about a 2nd round exit/conference loss from this roster as it is (minus injuries). Provided we heat up at the right time like last year. That being said Lou won't make a major move unless its a move that makes sense to him, not so much us. Now if he could pull off a Jagr rental without giving much I'd be all for it.

WTF?

How can anyone here feel good about that?

We were just in the Finals last year....Why would we be "feeling good" about going only as far(Maximum) as the Conference Finals?

It's not as if there's a Miami-Heat-type of team waiting for us or any other team out there....

You'd only 'feel good' about it if you weren't expecting to make the playoffs to begin with. I don't see why that would be the case unless you bought in to the whole Parise was the heart of the team nonsense and thought they'd fall down an elevator shaft. I didn't think they'd fall down one but I didn't - and still don't think the playoffs are any definite either.

I'm not sure still. It will take the next couple of games to see where this team is going for me at least. The Flyers are the only team out of the top 8 I can see getting in now, but if we beat them I think they're done unless they go on a big run after their break next week. The Rangers I see getting in still unfortunately. Maybe only as a 7th-8th seed. I think the southeast will just have one team in the playoffs this year. Unless one of us, Ottawa, or the Laffs falls out. Carolina, and Winnipeg are really the only two.

I don't see the Isles getting in at all. I think they'll start fading soon enough after they complete their weekend down here against the leagues bottom feeders. Florida is done, stick a fork in them. The Caps are still done too, and the Lightning I think also. Same goes for Buffalo. Those teams are gonna need a 10/11 Devils run to make it in. By those teams I mean Washington, TB, or a slight chance of Buffalo. Florida is done.

I can picture Jagr in a devils uni with his jersey tucked in the back...I have a gut feeling we're gonna get him. If we do I'm a psychic haha

I still don't get why you think the Flyers could get in over the Jets at this point. The Flyers have shown nothing all year to suggest they are a playoff team right now. Honestly I think switch the Jets and Rags are you are looking at the 8 playoff teams right now. If one team sputters out then the Jets sneak in.

Anyway I'd welcome Jagr, but I am with you as I am not sure Lou would go after him. Don't know why, just not seeing it.

I think Harrold might stay.

He's the perfect 7th D that fits well in the Devils system.

Admittedly, I haven't watched Jagr play much this year. But I recall last year he seemed to have slowed down quite a bit on the ice. I think the lack of speed was probably a big reason why Sykora wasn't brought back either.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Lou and Nieuwendyk make a trade though. Also doesn't surprise me to hear we may have interest in Morrow. He's the kind of player I can see Lou absolutely loving.

I don't think the Flyers will make it over the Jets. I just thought out of all the non playoff teams they'd have a chance, but they'd have to go on a big run, and win like 14-15 of their last games probably. Everybody in the conference has a game in hand on them at least. If we beat them tonight I think we bury them. For both the Rangers, and Jets to get in one of us, Ottawa, or Toronto will have to go away. Luckily for us both of the other team are having some rough weeks.

I want him back too. It's either him or bring a prospect in at number 7. Possibly Urbom, but I don't see Gelinas in a number 7 role in the NHL.

He's clearly lost his speed.

But it doesn't mean he is still strong on his skates and gifted offensively.

He'd be a PP player and offensive player for us, something we need. We have a lot of solid grinder types, we need another offensive weapon.

His play is deserving of a regular spot.

Hopefully, we can get rid of Tallinder and Zidlicky, but we still have the same problem if Harrold is a regular...

Greene-Larsson
Salvador-Fayne
Volchenkov-Harrold
Whoever

Since Urbom and Gelinas are lefties, we could ice:

Greene-Larsson
Gelinas/Urbom-Fayne
Volchenkov/Salvador-Harrold

I don't think they are going to be benching Volchenkov or a young guy regularly, so likely its a Volchenkov-Salvador third pairing.

I can see Lou making a run on Jagr if he's available at a decent price.

He tried to sign him 4 yrs ago ( rumor has it ) but Edmonton made it clear they would take him on re-entry waivers ( it was a mid-season move coming back from Russia )

We've got already zero forward prospects and now we should get a rid of our defensive ones ?
How many players will we need to draft and turn into legit NHLers in the next 3 years, 5 forwards and 3 defence-men ? Good luck with that.
Also who cares about Albany ? Did Henrique make this AHL team better when he was there ?
And if Urbom, Gelinas and Burlon suck why the other teams would want them anyway ?

Let's take look at our NHL defensive corps now, we can't say Volchenkov's really aging well, between Zids, Tally and Sally, the younger is already 34. What about injuries also ? Let's say we're trading 3 of your defensive prospect for one great guy, what are we going to do if he suffers a career ending injury. I'm serious, those things happen all the time. You don't put all your eggs in one basket.
