So, with our two main assets being Hudler and Russell, what other teams and players are we competing against? Who are the best depth defence and scoring winger options out there?

Vrbata, Parenteau, Polak seem to garner some interest. IMO Hudler and Russell will get some of the highest returns at the deadline

Loui Eriksson, Boedker, Eric Staal, Versteeg, Purcell

Hudler rates with Loui and Beodker but not as good as Eric. Purcell, Vrbata and Versteeg are a level below.

Liles, Justin Shultz ... Both are in the same class as Russell. Liles is stronger defensively and Shultz is a RFA and might garner a little more.

Don't think the Bruins will be trading Eriksson, he's be an integral part of their team this year and they are holding down a playoff position

We're also forgetting Ladd. He'll probably get the biggest return out of all the rentals

Ladd's another one, for sure.

Forwards:

Ladd
Hudler
Vrbata
E. Staal

I think those guys are in the mix with Hudler. Everyone else is probably a tier below, or with a low chance to be traded (like Eriksson).

Would like to see the Flames target some young roster players at the TDL or in the summer. A couple RFAs with speed and size would do this team some good next season. I'd rather a young roster player with upside + a 2nd or 3rd than a 1st + middling prospect for Hudler or Russell.

Teams just aren't willing to trade young players on their ELCs like they were before. GMs are super weary of cap space and want to keep cheap young players on their roster.

This is certainly true, but quality veteran depth still has value in this league, especially as rentals for a playoff run. Jiri in particular could get a nice return from a team like the Blues or Wild that have a dearth of good young talent that is NHL ready. Especially if that good young talent is due for a sizeable raise in the offseason.

The other occasion that teams trade RFA's in general is when there is a glut of a position in their system.

Dallas for example has an over abundance of RW prospects. Russell plus a prospect could maybe land Nichushkin or Ritchie. Before everyone jumps down my throat about Nichushkin understand he is on the fourth line. There maybe some promise there but Mattias Janmark passed him on the depth chart.

The top 6 are also pretty set for the next 2 years so that is why the rumors out there continue. Likely would cost the Flames Russell plus one of the better D prospects.

I think Russell is going to surprise some people with what he brings back to Calgary.

This forum can't stand the guy, but GMs are going to pay a pretty penny for him. This forum will go bananas for what he gets us.

yeah I agree, defensemen are always at a premium at the deadline, and Russell is a top 4 defender. I don't know if we'll get a first for him, but I don't think a lot of teams will be giving out firsts at all this deadline. Russell for Ritchie + 2nd from Dallas would be sweet

I agree that Russell is valued by other GM's. Russell and Liles are the 2 best UFA d-men on the market. Wideman will also be in demand after the appeal on Thursday when his suspension length is truly decided. Wideman is the right handed PP specialist many teams want. Detroit, Boston, Colorado, and Florida will have interest.

PS. Many teams will like how rested Wideman will be. He should not be nicked up at all. This could be a determining factor for teams pushing to get into the playoffs.

I think Russell will fetch a good amount to. But just because Dallas has a good amount of RW depth, that does not mean that they're going to give away Nuke for less than market value. Jim Nill is no fool, and you could probably get Nuke but thinking that Russell will achieve that as the main centerpiece is a pipe dream. It would Andersson/Kylington +. If we draft Mathews next year, does that mean we're going to trade Bennett for a rental? That just isn't going to happen. You might get a guy like Ritchie for Russell and Tspoon.

And Jooris has more value to us at his salary than he has in trade. If Tre moves Jooris it would show other teams have better analytics than we do.

Not at all. If another team seems something in Jooris and wants to acquire him, so be it. No guarantee he works out. Calgary could get a minor asset for a guy who may never be a regular NHLer.

Nill is far from being a fool. Many people know Nichushkin's name and his draft position and what they do not realize is that he has regressed after his injury last year. Brett Ritchie may be the better choice depending what the scouts say. Nichushkin is not worth what he was a couple years back and Nill does know that. Being only 20 nobody would expect to pick him up for free but the cost could be rather reasonable.

If we get Matthews Bennett will become a winger.

I was using Bennett as an example of how we value a comparable player to us. I heard Ruff on the radio being interviewed by Rob Kerr, they love Nuke in Dallas. He has size, can skate and has lots of skill. He's shown lots of flashes of what he can do, he would not be cheap at all. You are really under valuing him. If you don't believe me, you should make a proposal on the mainboard.

Actions are louder than words. He has slid from the 2nd line to the 4th line. In 1.5 years time. Points, advanced stats, and the eye test all have Nichushkin getting worse not better in his development. That is not common for a young player especially considering his team has moved in the exact opposite direction.

Nuke has went from 15 min a game in 13-14 down to 13:44 this year. Management has consistantly praised Ferly, Russell, and Bouma.. That does not make them worthy of high rewards.

Dallas is not as happy with nuke as what they portray in the media.

Well I will make my judgement from the words of the players coach, I suppose.

Nuke was also on the 4th when he returned from injury. Then he was on the 2nd line, then the top line. Now he has bounced into a bottom 6 role, and he will bounce back into the top 6 at some point. So is the life of a young player. Again, you are severely under valuing him. During his streak, the eye test was great. Not so much now that he has cooled off.

I am looking forward to my annual tradition of getting up at 6am on deadline day and tuning into TSN, and watching them try to fill time for 3 hours before the first trade happens while I make myself a nice breakfast and play some NHL on xbox.

Yea, every year I say I won't, then as soon as I wake up TSN is on all day.
