Confirmed with Link: [TOR] Maple Leafs Re-Sign Peter Holland [2 years/$775K AAV]

Looks like he took less for the one-way and the 2nd year option.

Now he is almost for sure playing in the NHL whether it be in Toronto or if he gets claimed off waivers. At worst he plays in the minors for 775k a year.

I don't want a player on our team if they need monetary incentive to make the NHL.

I am sure no professional athlete has ever been motivated to win by money.

Holland at this point is a tweener. Not good enough for a top 6 role and not well suited enough for a bottom 6 spot. An NHL salary can be a good incentive for a player to succeed.

For one, two-way contracts provide a bit of an incentive to the player to make the NHL and earn the higher salary (which means more production for the team)

I guess, although I'd think if that's what's driving a guy he probably isn't going to make much of an impact anyway.

With them signed that leaves us $11M in capspace with Gardiner, Franson, and Reimer to be signed. I imagine Franson is on the way out but with $6M(which is generous) allocated for Gardiner and Reimer, that leaves us with $5M in space with Orr still on the roster (which is unlikely).

FORWARDS
Joffrey Lupul ($5.250m) / Tyler Bozak ($4.200m) / Phil Kessel ($8.000m)

Holland is going to make 775K/year over his two-year deal. That's great value for a guy who could be a productive 3C over the two years.

His QO was 1 year @$850,500 on 2-way deal.

So it looks like he took a little less cash but got a 2 year & 1-way deal paying him $775k.

A lot of people, thanks to the NHL series of video games, think it has something to do with waiver eligibility.

In NHL 13 (or was it NHL12? I can`t remember...) it was one-way = waivers, 2-way = no waivers no matter the age and experience.

In NHL 14 though, they fixed that. It`s got the right parameters for waivers, 2-way or not.

Carter - 850k
Holland - 775k

Remaining: Gardiner, Franson, and Reimer.

Going by capgeek, the Leafs have $11,072,500 in cap space for the remaining 3 players. Not taking into account if Holland and Carter may or may not start the season with the Marlies.

Never got NHL 14. Made the next-gen jump on day one. Gambled on GTA 5 making it's way to PS4 and I'm getting it later this year and should get my NHL fix in september.

Holland and Ashton are Leafs or bust (another team) assuming they would get claimed. Both probably would

It also bring roster count to 20 players under contract and 3 short of a full max squad with the 3 RFA players above likely to fill those spots.

I really think Franson gets dealt. Reimer is almost certainly back.

Phrasing it that way makes it seem that a one-way contract with guaranteed NHL salary may drive down a player's incentive to make the big club.

Holland is Leafs or bust (another team). Ashton I think is still waiver eligible though.

That would be the wrong idea to have.

If the Leafs were to take a guy on a 1 year deal over a prospect with a lot of promise, it would mean a lot about how terrible this team is with asset management.

Holland is on a great contract and the Leafs giving him a 1 way contract tells me that they think he's too good for the AHL and it's up to him to show them where he fits on their roster.

Most likely that will be the case.

Cap hits last season of the 3 remaining:
Gardiner - $1,116,667
Franson - $2,000,000
Reimer - $1,800,000

I think the cap situation is looking pretty good for the foreseeable future.

Nice, I am a big fan of Holland and his play really impressed me last year.

Kinda hoping they put him on the wing with Kadri and Lupul. I really think he could excel in offensive opportunities and having good linemates like those two would help. To round out the bottom 2 lines:

Komarov-Santorelli-Clarkson/Frattin
Ashton-Kontiola-Frattin/Clarkson

I agree, I'd take both over Orr and Bodie easily.

But it doesn't change the fact that it is what it is and Leaf management can't change it. They have to try and ice the best roster.

You lose Bodie on waivers 100 times before you even risk losing a guy like Holland.
