Stole? He was waiting for the Lafreniere domino to fall.

Why only 4 years?

Gets to really cash in, in 4 years from now.

At that point he'll still be 29 or 30 so teams will still be willing to go max term, and the cap will be anywhere from $15-20M higher then it is today.

Assuming he doesn't regress hard, he signs for like 7x$18M as a UFA in 4 years on the open market probably. Or maybe stays with Toronto for like 8x$16.5M sort of thing.

Well it's a bit less than rumored I guess. 13.5 x3 seemed possible.

Will that be enough for Nylander to look at it like Matthews left money on the table?

The doghouse
Aav is fine for a top 5 player with a massive cap spike. With the remaining year on his deal this is 5 years of knowing AM34 anchors the franchise.

A million more AAV than MacKinnon with half the term…after mackinnon just led his team to a SC.

There is seriously no comparable for this contract that I am aware of

Pettersson is probably going to do something similar in Vancouver. It's probably because the cap is projected to up significantly in the next ~3 years. These guys want flexibility to negotiate another prime-year contract.
Which is fine, but it’s not a great way to show you’re real about winning
