On the flip side, it could be a sneaky good deal for Chicago as well. If Matthews does leave Toronto after 2024, that 2025 1st round pick gets a bunch of added value as the Leafs quickly become a bubble playoff team or worse.

I've always liked Jake McCabe, and felt he was the best target for a defenseman this offseason. Some pretty tidy work here. Seems Dubas knows that this is probably his last go at it to get out of the first round, and AM34 isn't getting younger.

I like their moves because they're doing exactly what teams should: addressing their needs.

Their major holes prior to the trades were:
-Questionable 3C and scoring in the bottom six
-Physicality that could actually play (Simmonds and Clifford were too useless to dress every night)
-Physical presence on D to replace Muzzin

Dubas essentially addressed every single one of those with these moves.
