Anybody hear about the plane dirtboxes that have been used lately. Basically planes that have powerful cell towers in them and fly over cities. Trick the phones in to believing their signals over the providers. Can also be used by drones. Scary stuff. The intelligence agency has come out and said they are using these. Basically they can cancel your phone calls, have access to all your browsing info with out having to go through the providor. Even when the phone is off. Going to be really interesting who leaked this information.

Some insiders who work with in the agency have come out to say that even though it has been used to catch criminals mostly, that the towers has no option but to also get info from innocent civilians since it scopes the whole radius. Encryptions and passwords are also overided and this has been going on for five years. It can also extract photos and text messages on to its hard drive.

Has anything been done about this, luke?

Or is this just going to be swept under the rug like everything else?

BTW, there's just something unconsitutional about this. It's like getting evidence without a warrant.

Seems like the Government, as always, is trying to circumvent the U.S. Court / Justice System.

Would love to see how THAT would hold up in Court if it's discovered that the Phone Provider never gave out their customers info or all that information...

I don't know would have to do some research. Information is pretty new. Read about it on the WSJ and Reuters. People will just keep on living their lives and forget about it, untill slowly they have less and less freedoms. Thats my guess.

Let's be realistic here. Even if they *CLAIM* it's for "catching criminals mostly", they won't exactly throw away the non-criminal info either. Bet you anything they have someone(or a group of people) sifting through private information/texts/pics every single day.

So the next time someone decides to send a text or take a pic of themselves, I guess we can count on that info/pic to be in the hands of the government. Wonderful.

That's one thing that pisses me off. If they just go after the criminal and pinpoint him before hand that's a different story, but obviously you can find a few more criminals when you have access to for example a one million people sample size. Soon if people want to keep a secret such as they are gay, or are sexually attracted to someone it can be used against them in higher positions down the road. People will probably pay for this info down the road.

Nothing patriotic about it. I'll leave it at that so we don't get political. There's an entire forum for that. http://hfboards.mandatory.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=160

Without getting into the political aspect, at all (!), I will say from a technical aspect, setting up a false cell tower is middle of the technical road (I could probably do it with a bit of research) and relatively inexpensive for the return. Think $1-2K or less depending on what you want to accomplish, the range, etc. There are security mechanisms built into most phones now (most 3/4G signal types (EDGE, HSPA+, LTE I believe...)) that prevent rouge towers from taking priority over 'real' towers, but there's a lot of use cases where you block out the others and force a basic GSM/CDMA connection for voice/SMS that doesn't have all those mechanisms and interecept phone calls and text messages.

With higher technical skill (think top .1% of people) where you can sign false certificates and the like, you could probably create false 4G towers too but the cost would be higher (guessing ~10K) but again, the return is definitely worth the investment if you know your target.

Recent article I read:

Well, we now know the government thinks they can make enough people support anything they want because they literally think their voters are stupid.

That's certainly comforting.

Well, we now know the government thinks they can make enough people support anything they want because they literally think their voters are stupid.

But it's the truth. Why should anybody be appalled? Then again, dumb people don't realize their dumb. They're the people that can't find a job, balance a checkbook, or do a basic google search. Some people trust celebrities like Dr. Oz and Sarah Palin so much that they will parrot whatever they say.

Politicians LOVE these people because they're easily manipulated and because they number in the millions. It's a large voting block. This is why things like the Patriot Act and No Child Left Behind get passed. They're awful pieces of legislation but they sound nice and that's all they need to hear. The media, who should be the eyes and ears for America, don't provide enough information because they don't read. Instead you get a picture of Kim Kardashian's ass

Last year, I had a 19 year old ask me how to subtract 98 from 100. My jaw hit the ground. Can you seriously be that stupid? How did you get through life to this point?

Although Stockton College bought the Showboat property, that's 3 hotel/casinos all next door to each other closing down and number 5 to close in less than a year in AC

In the depths of this forum is the TaN's heyday.

There was well mannered frivolity.

There was ill tempered confabulations.

Raleigh was found on a map.

"Weekends" became the day to hang out.

And then, suddenly and without warning, the fun stopped.

Bans....suspensions....demotions....suspicious disappearances.

Nothing has brought the fun back.

It's gotten to the point where you can't even make a joke around here in any thread because it's either "inappropriate" (I got my balls busted for posting a gif a few weeks ago on this board that has been used for years by myself and others without issue) or people are just too damn serious

I went back a month and you haven't posted anything in the TaN. You can't complain about not having fun if you don't participate. I
