Klefbom for Skinner would be like Waddell going to Benning and being like "I feel bad for you doing the Hall for Larsson trade so here's Skinner for Klefbom, buddy!"

Obviously I don't think Skinner is as good as Hall but I just don't think Klefbom is that good, especially if we're trading Skinner for him.

Poor Benning, guy can’t catch a break.

To flesh out that prior post, in the past 20 years there have been about 70 forwards with a similar GP/Pts profile to Kapanen's, up to age 21.

The very best in that group include Loui Eriksson, Derek Roy, Antoine Vermette, and Reilly Smith.

The others who had substantial (400+ game) careers are Dan Cleary, Casey Cizikas, Fredrik Sjostrom, Tyler Kennedy, Blake Comeau, Todd Fedoruk, Chris Stewart, Nazem Kadri, Maxime Talbot, Max Lapierre, Sean Bergenheim, Darcy Hordichuk, Cody McCormick, Devin Setoguchi, Matt Calvert, Boyd Gordon, Arron Asham, and Dave Bolland.

The other 2/3rds of that group includes familiar names like Zach Boychuk, Patrick O'Sullivan and Andrei Loktionov, guys who came and went without leaving any substantial mark on the league.

Even assuming Kapanen (by pure virtue of being a Maple Leafs 1st-round pick) is going to be in the upper 1/3rd of that group, the overwhelming likelihood is that he's going to be a guy you barely notice. Only if you absolutely hit the jackpot do you get a player that's on a Faulk-like level.

Kapanen is a former 1st round pick with a notable last name, the centerpiece in a trade for a star player, part of the prospect pool of the biggest market in the NHL and the best forward prospect that the aforementioned organization has. He even has a marquee WJC performance, okay goal, to boot.

I'm surprised he isn't hyped more than he is, tbh.

Just proves that he's simply a fairly meh prospect. See little difference between him and Zach Boychuk.

Actually an offer sheet for Hanifin could make a lot of sense for a team.

Let’s say a team like Boston offers Hanifin 5 years x $6 million. Only costs them a 1st + 3rd. They can go up to $8.1 million x 5 years by adding a 2nd. Or similarly offer $5.8 million x 7 years and only pay 1st + 2nd + 3rd.

Do the Canes match $5.8 million x 7 years? Seems like a Cup-level team might jump on that for the cost of only a 1st + 2nd + 3rd. While we don’t know exactly how the Canes feel about Hanifin.

The Canes best asset in this hypothetical might be Hanifin’s pride. Teams might be willing to offer that and the Canes might not be willing to match, but it has been documented that Hanifin considers himself a future #1 so he may hold out for more. Conversely he might be happy to go sign a long OS with a Cup contender to be in a better place to shine.
