I've always been very fond of this one of Burrows.

You have to be able to not take things too seriously when you're a Canucks fan, unless you want to be sad/angry all the time.

^ That's from game 2 of the 2011 SC finals right after he scored the game winner a minute or so into OT on a wrap-around.

This one is good also.

Well, that picture goes way back before photoshop... I remember it from a book when I was a kid... It may be a manipulation but it certainly wasn't done on photoshop.

I didn't want to suggest it was actually done with Photoshop. That's why I put shopped between a pair of those marks: "

I can't seem to find ones of him literally on his head, but this one is apt:

He crucified my Team Canada in the 1998 Olympic shootout:

Coach Crawford did not choose Gretzky among the 5 for the shootout, and we lost:

Here he is acting with his daughter (explaining it takes away from the kooky goalie image value though:

Lionel Conacher,a real warrior and great athlete sitting in the dressing room after his last NHL game on April 23, 1937
You can see it in his eyes, he's tired, that's it for him. A new chapter of his life is about to begin.

Glen Sonmor [1929-2015] who passed away less than three weeks ago had a legendary temper. Here's when he was at it on February 26, 1981 when the penalty minute record was set between Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars (that Sonmor coached at the time). For some reason this makes me laugh when I see it. Good old times. The Boston police had a busy night.

For some reason this makes me laugh when I see it. Good old times. The Boston police had a busy night.

400+ penalty minutes in that game, after Sonmor told the North Stars, who had always been patsies for the Bruins, both on the scoreboard and in the rough stuff, to just drop the gloves and fight at the first hint of conflict. So the fights started at the opening faceoff, and never really stopped. And yes, some of the players and the coach fought fans up in the stands, too. The Stars lost that game, but it got planted in their heads that they wouldn't be pushed around any more, which was Sonmor's goal. When they met the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs that spring, they finally believed they could go toe-to-toe with the Bruins, who had completely owned them since the franchise began. They swept the Bruins and used that as a springboard to a run to the Cup finals. You hear about Herb Brooks' psychology mastery with his players all the time, but this was a classic by Sonmor. He just passed away and will be missed.

amazing photo.

what stands out to me (despite that some are on skates and some aren't) is how large Howe is (and how he must have towered over/terrorized players in his day!). Seeing him next to Eric, who did the same in his era, is pretty cool. I see Eric around Toronto now and then, I can't imagine this guy on skates with speed and rage. Damn.

Also, Gretzky is not a large man. Incredible how he managed to play so long in the league and be that much better than everyone else, with that frame.

What's crazy about that photo is look at the size difference between Howe and Kariya... Not a big difference, yet one was an all time power forward and the other one of the smaller finesse forwards in the 90s.

Six more from the Sutter factory - the next generation - have been drafted by NHL teams and a seventh, Riley, is a 16 year old in the WHL.

The man in the black hat directly behind and above the goalkeeper, leaning forward ... is that the goal judge, watching the goal line carefully? He might have a button in that hand to activate the red light.

I remember that in Chicago Stadium, mid-1960s, the goal judge had an elaborate enclosed area about his seat, but perhaps it was more informal in the 1950s.

Yes it is. He's sitting on a higher stool, looking down at the goal line. I was a goal judge for a few games in Minnesota, late 60's, early 70's.

Speaking of Howe... (before the sport/hobby of weightlifting in gyms - and before juicing)

You know what would be cool? There must still be some fans who can pick themselves out in the crowd in that picture. To be one of those would be like achieving "fan immortality". I'm sure there must be at least a handful of them around...has anyone heard of someone claiming to be in that pic?
