50 years ago George Halas wanted nothing to do with Soldier Field in Chicago and when the NFL told him to leave Wrigley Field because it was too small and did not have lights he almost moved the team to Evanston to play at the Northwestern stadium BUT in 1971 Evanston would not allow the sale of alcohol.

The renovation of Soldier Field 20 years ago was a disaster.

Perhaps the McCaskey Family looks at what the Patriots did in Foxborough and thinks that is the way to go.

Bears sign purchase agreement for Arlington Park Racecourse land for stadium

Three-and-a-half months after putting in a bid to buy the Arlington International Racecourse property, the Bears have signed a purchase agreement for the 326-acre plot, a mayoral spokesperson said late Tuesday night.

It’s the latest — but not final — step toward moving the team from Soldier Field to the site, located 6 miles north of the Northwest Tollway, which held its last race Saturday.

The Bears said in June that they were among the groups to put in a bid to purchase the property. If the franchise’s bid was accepted, the team said then, it would be able to “further evaluate the property and its potential.” That is the case now, though the team could still negotiate with the city to remain on the lakefront.
The team told Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot about the purchase agreement Tuesday night.

“We are not surprised by this move,” Lightfoot said in a statement after The Athletic reported the purchase agreement. “We remain committed to continuing to work to keep the team in Chicago and have advised the Bears that we remain open to discussions.”

The Bears did not return a request for comment late Tuesday. Bears Chairman George McCaskey has not spoken publicly since the team put in the bid, forgoing his annual season-opening news conference.

This will be huge moment for Chicago Bears and Chicago

Speculation of move to suburbs has been around since 70's and it appears Bears are finally doing it.

Though this move will be issue for most South Side and South Burb fans who wont be able to or will have difficulty traveling to Arlington Park (Along with Northern Indiana fans). No longer will fans be able to jump on Metra to stadium on Sunday's (My only Bears game was getting on train with a bunch of other Bear fans and heading on down to Stadium)

Also though a longshot it does open door to another long speculated possibility of Chicago returning to a two team city (As LA and NY are)

Back in 1966, Halas brokered the AFL/NFL merger for one reason - to keep the AFL and NBC out of Chicago. Halas had gotten rid of the Chicago Cardinals in 1959 when they moved to St. Louis BUT he knew the AFL and NBC wanted an expansion team in Chicago for the 1966 season and he pressured Pete Rozelle to make the deal. The expansion AFL franchise then became the Miami Dolphins.

Think I heard it on the mcafee show that the McCaskey family doesn’t have the money to build a new stadium like Kroenke did in LA. See how this plays out.

I don’t see the NFL going to a second Chicago team. At some point they’re gonna get to London.

“I’m the mayor of the city, I’m a Bears fan of longstanding, I’m going to do everything I can to try to keep the Bears in Chicago,” Lightfoot said. “But just as this is a business decision for them, it’s a business decision for us.

"They actually got to come to us and tell us what they want. We have been open to a conversation. They have not."

Lori Lightfoot: We want to keep Bears in city, but they aren't interested in negotiating

what's the issue with soldier field?

or do they just want to move to the suburbs because that's where the majority of their fans are?

Money from the sounds of it. Capacity is in the low 60k and for a city the size of chicago that’s small. Plus likely other revenue streams and other things. Lease runs til 2033 so another 12 years.

not sure if the family has the money. A couple of these long term owned family teams will have the issue of paying the inheritance tax when ownerships transfers from one generation to the next. The team is the family’s main source of income thus they don’t have the money elsewhere to pay for stadiums and taxes.

Stadium is too small , Bears want more $ from gameday via control of various revenue streams and Bears for years haven't had primary control of some of the running of stadium/control

Remember all those years with awful field because city/park district didn't want to switch to artificial turf

Also at times thru years Bears field has been ruined by high school games and concerts being held in season that left issues

Kinda sucks they ruined Soldier Field so badly during renovation that it got taken off the list of National Historic Landmarks, and just a couple decades later will be moving out of it.

This opens up more opportunities like Chicago hosting the Super Bowl, the College Football Playoff, WrestleMania

Only if they spend money and build a dome. Outdoor stadium won't do.
For the attitude of the people of Chicago they’d probably build a retractable roof stadium. Won’t be breaking ground until 8-9 more years from now as the lease runs to 2033 with penalties.

Yeah it was dumb at time and looks worse now

Problem is building on lakefront is limited so there is no viable location for Bears and overall no viable location within city to build a domed stadium as costs for lands , environmental impact studies , city permits , work on infrastructure , etc would be astronomical with city unwilling to pitch in much

Arlington Park is rolling out red carpet and area's around it likely will help chip in some $ because of the overall money stadium will bring

I think city is underestimating how many concerts , etc will opt for new stadium over Soldier Field + You have United Center and Allstate Arena that will stay booked with indoor concerts and events

During the winter Soldier Field will be pretty useless as venue with or without Bears while a Bears domed stadium if it happens will be utilized year round

It’s too small.

Parking/coming/going is a nightmare.

Not enough room/space/land to expand.

The majority of fans you’ll talk to will tell you how annoying the experience is attending games/events there.
