Outside of winning 1/2nd overall this is my dream scenario. Would certainly be an interesting position to be in.

It would be a great position to be in...there are almost two phases to the draft this year - the first part with the two shiny prizes and then the rest of the draft. The third pick is essentially the top of the second phase...a phase that still has a lot if talent to pick from. At that point NJD would control their destiny and have a lot of options as to how to handle the pick and have choices of top NHL forwards. #3 is where things become interesting.

Exactly. It would make for a very entertaining draft because I do have faith that Lou can still negotiate. It would open up more than a few options and could peed along this retooling more than a single pick would.

Buffalo has 3 first rounders. IF they end up getting Eichel/McDavid and being stacked with future talent already I wonder if they would trade one for a more immediate NHL guy like Gelinas, Merrill, etc. The other 2 not owned by them are NYI and St. Louis so they will be 20-30 range.

Buffalo has 4 picks in the top 35 which is crazy nice. Overall Tampa has 10 which is interesting considering how they are a top team atm.

Although a extra 1st is hard to get it would be nice to snag an extra 2nd. There could be a lot of sliders this draft like Korostelev, Bracco, and Dergachev that would be in the 2nd.

Top 30 ranking from Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News: http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/2015-nhl-draft-rankings-mcdavid-still-rules-the-roost/

1. Connor McDavid, C – Erie Otters (OHL)
Game-changing ability anytime he steps on the ice. As expected, he got better as the world juniors went on since he was just returning from a broken hand, but delivered several exquisite goals. Vision and hockey IQ some of the best ever.

2. Jack Eichel, C – Boston University Terriers (Hockey East)
Was it fair to make an 18-year-old captain of Team USA? That’s a debate point for another time. But Eichel’s resume is still incredible in the NCAA. Playing against older, stronger competition he has used his shot, speed and playmaking to wreck the field.

3. Noah Hanifin, D – Boston College Eagles (Hockey East)
A 17-year-old making an impact on a major college program’s blueline is pretty rare, but that’s Hanifin, who also played at the world juniors for Team USA. Fast, well-built and incredibly poised, Hanifin is everything an NHL team wants in a defenseman.

4. Dylan Strome, C – Erie Otters (OHL)
With McDavid out of the lineup, Strome proved he is in no way protected by his teammate. The big, smart center scored 12 points in the first seven games of McDavid’s injury and Strome currently sits second in Ontario League scoring with 72 points in just 39 games.

5. Mathew Barzal, C – Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL)
Out since November with a knee injury, it would be easy to knock Barzal down simply because he’s been out of the spotlight. But he’s still a known talent, with excellent playmaking abilities and vision; that won’t disappear when he returns.

Honestly I wouldn't mind if the Devils ended up with any of Strome, Barzal, Marner, Zacha, Svechnikov, Rantanen, Sprong...

Hell, even if I don't want Crouse anywhere near the Devils, he'd still immediately be our most valuable prospect the second he's drafted. The reality is that trying to pick the best player between spots 5 and 15 is usually more like throwing darts than an exact science. So...throw a good dart, Lou.

Watching the London vs. Erie game. McDavid is insane. Just scored a ridiculous backhand wraparound. He's so quick. WE NEED!

Brazal or Stromr would be great.

Strome looks unimpressive tonight. Doesn't move his feet enough, not quick. Has 2 secondary assists though. Marner has a good motor, not the biggest guy by any means but he has made some great plays offensively and defensively. Like him a lot.

Each time I hear that a draftee has "a good motor", I immediately picture Stephen Gionta and his "grit".

Not to say that Marner is like Gio(he's not, thank god) but Strome is the guy I want.

Marner is not a "grit" player. He is highly skilled and leads the OHL in scoring. Great hands, solid speed and works hard. Having a good motor shouldn't be a knock on anyone so not sure where your coming from there.

There was this kid who used to play for us, I think his name was Parise, that had "a good motor"...

With that win tonight, Edmonton is 9 points back of us with 2 games in hand. Carolina is 8 points back with 3 games in hand. Phoenix is 2 points back of us with 4 games in hand. After we get back from California, we easily could be in the thick of things for a top 3 pick.

Should officially start tanking for McDavid now. Sell Zids, Sal, Jags, Ryder at the deadline.

Grit's become another four-letter word like two-way player. The only problem with grit is when that's ALL a player has. But plenty of skilled players have grit too.

why is Lawson Crouse so high on all these drafting lists, but I've seen a lot of posts saying that he's a bit to high on these lists? I haven't seen any games so I'd like to know more about him.

Perhaps coincidentally this was what I wrote after I saw Erie back in September: http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showpost.php?p=90119471&postcount=16

Dylan Strome: He got two assists, but I was left a little underwhelmed. He's got size and plays more methodically than his older brother Ryan. But perhaps it's just unfair to watch Strome and have McDavid there at the same time.
