There's no fit at all. Detroit has a severe logjam on D. Dekeyser, Smith, Green, Kronwall, Marchenko, Ericsson, Ouellet, and Sproul all need roster spots next year, they have no room for any middle-bottom pair D. They need a true top pairing D that is all. Girardi is not that.
