To VAN: Cirelli, Sergachev, Johnson
To TBL: Hughes, Podkolzin, Eriksson (bought out)

Tampa does this trade for 3 reasons.

reason 1: Hughes and Podkolzin are both expansion draft exempt, assuming seattle will pick a player over a prospect you will have 8 forwards and 4 defenceman (is Foote exempt?) from the starting roster protected.

reason2: Podkolzin is Going to be an excellent player in the NHL right away. Getting him for 3 years on a ELC will set you up to be a stanley cup favorite for at least the next 3 years. Jere Lehtinen 2.0

Reason 3: Hughes will be his best self on a team like Tampa, since your team always has the puck, Expect hughes to put up 100 point seasons.

Canucks do this trade for 4 reasons

reason 1 the value of Cirelli and Sergachev make up for the negative value that TJ brings for the next 3 seasons.

Reason 2: Hughes is not a good fit for a team with the worst puck possession metrics

Reason 3: Cirelli is the perfect player for the canucks and a perfect replacement for Sutter and an eventual replacement for Horvat.

Reason 4: Loui Eriksson, for the first time in 5 years will help the canucks win a game.

conclusion: Both teams do this trade to improve their teams for the short term

Not even close for Vancouver. Hughes is the first number 1 defenseman in franchise history, and Podz is going to a be a good one. The difference between Loui and Johnson isn’t enough to compensate for the difference in Hughes+Podz/Cirelli+Serg

I feel like this isn't great for either team, but I can see a reason for Vancouver to do it and can't see any for Tampa to do it

to all the canucks fans,

ask any tampa bay fans, Cirelli is the best player in this trade hands down and will be bergeron 2.0 and Sergechev will be Hedman-lite.

to all the Tampa bay fans

ask any vancouver fans, Hughes is the best player in this trade hands down and a future 1D(He's not a 1d though, he's something unique).

and Podkolzin is the second coming of god.

Since neither of you likes it, it's probably fair value.

Yall are crazy.

On reflection, the part that nixes the deal has got to be that god-awful Johnson contract.

Thankfully Eriksson's contract lasts only one more year.

the main reason tampa does this is to protect it's prospects from Seattle expansion while also lowering their CAP, there good at circumventing the cap but not three years in a row good. Reducing Tampa's cap without sacrificing its future or it's compete level. Having a player like hughes on a team like Tampa allows them to play the game differently when ahead and behind.

Vancouver does this because having a player like Hughes on a team like ours is a waste, Hughes cant retrieve the puck, and neither can any other player. Cirelli and Sergachev for at least the next 3 years are players that will help Vancouver win more games than Hughes and Podkolzin

i totally agree with you, but Johnson is still a 0.5ppg player, and The Value of Hughes and an unproven(Yet top 3 in the league) prospect is less than Cirelli and Sergachev. you have to give to get

Tampa Bay is not going to make any blockbuster trades, because they don't need to make changes. They're getting Kucherov back at season's end. They are fine. They'll tinker, look to add a rental or two. That's probably it. They do not need to subtract anything from their roster, a roster that has run roughshod over the league for the last two seasons.
