The league tolerates these types of players for some reason. They really have to injure a player and ruin their hockey career before anything is done about the situation. Just a slap on the wrist and it's on to the next fight. No real hockey involved in a player like this. Just intimidation. The powers that be put their blinders back on and cross their fingers that the league won't be embarrassed.

And here I thought for once the league was going to take a stand against goon hockey. Guess not! When Boulton hurts someone badly I hope the player injured sues the pants off them.

Is it unacceptable that I am ok with the 2 games?

You're entitled to your opinion like the rest of us. My opinion is that discipline should be progressive and more harsh with each subsequent infraction. 2 games would be appropriate for a first infraction.

For a league that is making a big deal of an alleged bounty, they seem totally ok with a guy who is out headhunting every game.

For which infraction would you have levied a steeper suspension? From what I gather, this is the discipline that Sawyer received:
1) 2 minute minor for instigating
2) 5 minute major for fighting
3) game misconduct for instigating in the last 5 minutes
4) 2 game suspension for his 4th fight (automatic suspension)

I am not sure where the league could have been justified in stepping in with a harsher suspension? Was there a further infraction on the play by Sawyer that went uncalled in your eyes? How would you have called it?

You're making an argument based on the rules and standards currently in place. Which, fine, technically you are correct is the very literal sense.

But the right thing to do is to punish him for the pattern of behavior he exhibits. That's the point some are making. The standard by which you punish guys like Boulton has to fundamentally change.

I guess I just don't see where he could have been further punished in this instance under the current rules? Is it the 4th fight, or is it a different infraction that you believe was suspension-worthy? If different, I would like to hear specifics. Punishing a "pattern of behaviour" is not specific enough, IMO.

Fighting in hockey is not like any other offense in the game. Even though it is punishable by major penalties, the leagues ensure that it is not subject to progressive discipline. The automatic 2 game suspension for exceeding the fight limit is non-negotiable. It's 2 games whether it's your 4th fight or your 14th. Every rulebook talks about major penalties "except fighting" when discussing progressive discipline.

I am all for punishing a "pattern of behaviour", but in this case I don't see a pattern? Check to the head, and then 4th fight, does not constitute a pattern to me. Apples and oranges.

I think the point of this exercise is the player was brought in to the league for a specific reason. Intimidation. He doesn't contribute anything to a game other than to knock an opposing players block off if the coach thinks it's warranted for any particular reason. The league put the fighting rules in place to eliminate the goon hockey players putting 20 or so notches in their guns. I guess some only see a pattern after a player has maybe ten fights and injures three or four opposing players over a season. League is fine with the status quo. Kingpin hit the nail on the head.

How many times constitute a pattern to you? Does he have to do this 3 more times?

We all know why he's out there. It's not a secret. He's there to hurt people.

Do what? Honestly, I am not trying to be a prick or obtuse. The department of player safety needs to have a punishable offense in order to punish him. So what has he done recently to warrant this?

If he fights 3 more times he will get 2 games each time he does. As per the very explicit suspension rules surrounding fighting. There are enough games in a season that a player could technically instigate 25 fights in a regular season even with all the 2 game suspensions they would incur after the 3rd fight. It would be interesting if a player attempted this to see if there would be any future changes to the suspension rules around fighting.

100%. But what can the league do about it? They can only react, they can't pre-emptively act.

The league treats fighting completely separate from dirty hits.

What has he done since December 10 to warrant additional suspension? Or are you arguing that the Dec 10 discipline was not substantial enough?

Again, as far as the rules as are concerned now, you are correct. I am not making my point based on rules currently in place. The rules currently in place are not sufficient.

We've already agreed that he is here purely to inflect damage. He doesn't have to do anything more. The second hit took out BMB he should have been done for the season. He had a history in every single league he played in before the OHL. He should have had a short leash to begin with. First showing of intent to injure should have been it for him.

Lots of players come into the league with suspension history from prior leagues though. The thing about S.Boulton is that aside from playing like this he really offer anything else of value on the ice. But is that a punishable offense? It's not just his past history is it? What about a player like Musty? His draft year he had 38 PIM in 14 games. Are we going to throw the book at a first overall pick on his first offense in the league?

You are right though. The levels of punishment of progressive discipline are set up to hopefully be fair, and yet hopefully be a deterrent to a 4-year OHL player that continually crosses the line. Of course, we can debate how close the get to hitting that mark.

For a 1-year OHL player like S.Boulton however, the levels of punishment of progressive discipline are likely insufficient to be a big enough deterrent to change the behaviour in one season.

I don't know the answer. And you still have these kinds of players in the NHL. This is supposed to be a development league, aren't we trying to develop players for the next level? Until they remove this type of play from the NHL, I don't see it getting removed from the OHL. And I don't see that happening any time soon?

Don't recall seeing these power rankings posted. Ridiculous IMO. London has only lost 1 game in their last 10. Soo is 6-4-0-0.

This is where I've alluded to the team or hunter receiving fines/punishment at some point as it's obvious that Boulton does exactly what Dale wants him to. The alternative is waiting until he ends a career or causes life-long damage (or worse) to a promising athlete. Like I said, at this point I hope someone sues the league into oblivion for negligence.

I don't think it's been posted....

Tucker Tynan is suing the Greyhounds for allegedly neglecting a shoulder injury (refusing imaging, which when done at a later date showed a tear) and for using a slur. As per Rick Westhead.

Apologies for not linking the article.
