I said last year his upside was perennial Norris candidate. Kev had a fit. :)

My computer doesn't like the new boards and crashes pretty much every time I try to come on here. But I had to come today if only to say that I was wrong about Slavin. He's not overrated. He's spectacular. I still might have an issue with "perennial Norris candidate" for the reasons outlined above, but after last night, I'm better off just shutting up.

Doughty won the Norris in 2016 with 51 points, including only 25 ES points. He beat the PPG, 56 ES point (!) season from Erik Karlsson.

Slavin would have to put up a 45 ES point, 55-60 point year while shutting down Crosby, OV et al for us to throw our collective heads at Sens fans over whether or not the 20 point difference is made up in Slavin's defensive capabilities. Those guys are battle hardened at this, veterans of the trenches of HF Mainboard clickbait, masters of "winning" pointless, neverending debate. The only thing close was us vs. Sharks fans, 6 max limit Calder threads 2010, take a drink if you remember when Logan Couture was the best 200 foot player in the League, finish your drink if you remember thinking, "Well what the f*** does that mean?!". We never did get an answer.

Anyway I actually think Slavin, in his best-of-best, lightning in a bottle, all the planets aligned year could put up 40-45 ES points. Then the question becomes one of his prospective competition.

But yeah, IF Slavin were to ever have that type of 40-45+ point ES regular season with some extra coming on the PP, then he'd have to at least be in the conversation IMHO. Oddly enough it feels weird being the one pumping the breaks like this after I was one of the guys that was pumping his tires the most as a prospect when he was at Colorado College. But it's safe to say my projection of him as another Vatanen has now been easily exceeded.

What we have to do is, make up a new definition for Slavin that is impossible to argue against, i.ie, if Couture is the best 200 foot player in the league then Slavin is the best, (whatever the cubic foot measurement that is 100 x 85 feet minus the roundedness of the corners times the height of his backhanded pitchfork clear) player in the league. It's all about creating a narrative and then beating it half to death until nobody even cares to try and fight you on it.

Slavin is good, no doubt, but the Norris almost gets to be partly a lifetime achievement award. He'll have to get in the mix this year, and the Canes be relevant to have a chance next year. I mean, he's just beginning to get a little name recognition now because, you know, Canes

And then we get:

"if the canes defense is so good, how come they're not in the playoffs?!"

In my opinion, the best player in the NHL is in Ottawa and he is a defense men. Slavin will need to bring in at least 45 - 50 points to get it. His shut downs are amazing to watch. We truly are in for a treat this season with his defensive play.

3 common posts that show just how ignorant fans are.

1) If he's so good, how come they aren't in the playoffs.
2) People are only hyping him because he's on a small market team.
3) If I've never heard of him, he can't be that good.

Yes, all 3 of those have been and are frequently applied to Slavin.
