Had to disable java and flash on this site. Lose some features, but also got rid of the lag. Shouldn't be necessary, but the forums are terrible otherwise.

yah a good chunk of stuff, but that's fine. i'd rather lose the stuff, vs. have it and can't even post.
like I said, I get they want to run some ads, but it shouldn't be unbareable to do what the main function is which is chat.

I've been having the screen freeze on my desktop pretty often, stays frozen for a good minute usually, sometimes more. Sometimes it crashes my browser too.

It is making me visit the site less often for sure. But I'm sure they'll get it working better.

The format change was definitely in large part to shoehorn more ads in the faces of users and increase ad revenue. It sucks, but that's reality. The site runs like garbage during games, trying to load 40 ads while people participate in game threads.

I don't know if the upgrade was for that purpose. Xenforo is fairly modern compared to vBulletin. Ads were always a major issue with the forum. I don't have any issues with lag or the ads though. Perhaps with the proper addon.

When someone quotes a video and you click “Click to expand” and you can only see half the video with no way of scrolling down to make it fullscreen.

I think so. I know people wanted a "modern" website - I don't really see the point. nothing was wrong with the other place. you could easily modify the titles of threads, things worked fine. if people didn't want ads they could become a sponsor.


Like i don't even know if this is going to make any difference - is anyone monitoring these replies? basically to have the entire thing run on javascript and flash is crazy. the point of any bulletin board is to actually build/cultivate friendships, and discuss the topic at hand. When it takes 25+ minutes to load something, you lose that.

thankfully the lag is gone, it's worth not being able to quote properly, or to customize my text. it was either that or say goodbye to HF land.

Mostly desktop/laptop browsers are significantly impacted, mobile users not so much.

I hope they are doing something about it, likely not as there really aren't any HF alternative sites out there.

Well, there's alternatives just not with the traffic this site has.

I used to visit a forum called Harmony Central, for musicians. Massive site. They decided to move on from vBulletin and it was an epic disaster and now the subforum I used to visit multiple times daily that had hundreds if not thousands of new posts a day is down to what seems like 3 or 4 posts a day. Basically they killed a massive community when they could have just stuck to what worked and appreciate what they had.

I really hope that doesn't happen here, and the easiest way to prevent that would be to just get the site working and not freezing or crashing and get some alternative themes out asap because the appearance is a turn off for most people. I think it's ok but a big step down from the old site.

I've sat down with the intentions of surfing these boards like usual and after a few freezes I just decide to go do other stuff, that's not good and the frustration will only get worse the longer it's like this (though it's been good today for me) and it will result in the community dwindling. It can happen surprisingly fast even to the biggest forums.

The really frustrating part is that even after the migration to xenforo, it was running fine for a while. All of this lag/sluggishness seems to have started last Wednesday.

They are a bunch of other forums that run xenforo and they run perfectly fine, so this is strictly an HF problem. Really hope they fix this soon.

And yeah, all the problems are just on my laptop for me. Mobile works great.
