Unfortunate this happened and people can blame some of this on Ship not reporting but he chose Vegas as he was sold on being given a top 6 role. Also GMGM is showing his true colours trying to ensure Ship doesn’t sign with another team and doesn’t get claimed. He’s completely sandbagging Ship and it’s a ******* move.

I would do the same thing as GMGM. Too many soft people on here worried about appearances and promises you can't even say for sure were extended. Guy signed a contract, these things are part of being an NHL player. There will always be another guy working his ass off to beat you out of a job, why wasn't Ship ready for that challenge?

Being a GM is tough at times, calls for making a lot of decisions fans don't agree with who fall for nonsense such as free agents left for "nothing" and the guys you have in your building now are always worth more than guys who are not. Few GMs have the power and the guts to stick to a good plan once it gets a little difficult. This will be one of his easier decisions really. Most players who conduct themselves professionally will see a player who didn't practice or prepare hard who shows up and acts like he can dictate terms to his coach and management.

The only real blowback that comes from this is from agents who will then lie and deny as much as they can to keep their players away from a certain GM. It happens and maybe you can't get a player or two down the road, so be it. No player who really makes a difference was coming to you as a free agent in those situations anyways.

15. Speaking of Anaheim, the Ducks made a legitimate attempt to work out a trade for Vadim Shipachyov, but the bonus repayment issue got in the way. When this is finally resolved, he will retire from the NHL, with the Golden Knights retaining his rights until he’s 35 (similar to Ilya Kovalchuk). He’ll repay most of his $2-million signing bonus and go back overseas. It might be the first time someone’s ever had to do that, but there is pretty clear language about returning money in case of retirement. The price of a potential return was in the neighbourhood of a fifth-rounder.

Backup Knights goalie Dylan Ferguson enjoying his time in NHL

McPhee said he was still waiting for the final sign-off by attorneys for the NHL and the Players Association on Vadim Shipachyov on the agreement that was reached last Saturday for him to retire voluntarily from the NHL and resume his playing career in Russia.
“Maybe Wednesday, probably Thursday or even Friday,” McPhee said on when he can expect the paperwork to be completed.

Did the Golden Knights Twitter have anything amusing to say about this situation? It seems kind of serious, but it was a nice career: Ship 2017-2017.

Vadim Shipachyov officially parts ways with Golden Knights

Shipachyov forfeits $9 million in salary he was due to receive from the Knights over the next two seasons. He can’t return to the league unless it’s to play for the Knights, who will own his rights for the next five years. He also had to return most of his $2 million signing bonus.
The NHL and the NHL Players Association worked out the terms of the agreement Saturday with input from the Knights and Petr Svoboda, Shipachyov’s agent. The team had suspended him without pay Oct. 29 after Shipachyov left the AHL Chicago Wolves without permission.

Article details other accommodations the team made as well. He definitely wasn't comfortable playing in NHL/North America.

Vadim Shipachyov deserves blame for struggles with Golden Knights

Positive comments toward GMGM on his handling of situation

Shipachyov’s comments smack of someone who felt entitled to his NHL roster spot by virtue of his reputation and $9 million contract.
The guess is that McPhee sold Shipachyov and his agent on the idea that there would be plenty of opportunities for playing time with the expansion team.
But it’s not McPhee’s fault Shipachyov didn’t earn it.

McPhee isn't the only GM who uses **merit** (performance on the ice) to determine who'll be on the NHL roster. (And Gallant the coach who tries to select the best line up given the players at his disposal.)

I have watched a number of collegiate free agents sign with a team that's not my favorite as it's perceived they'll have more opportunities to play elsewhere. So, while it may sting that guys sign where they are promised better skating opportunities, they often do not live up to the hype. (Not to mention a few 1st rounders who fail to work out, literally and figuratively.)
