If you believe he was anything more than a good bottom sixer on a value contract who was originally moved at the appropriate time, you’ve already overrated him.

You can appreciate what he brought while still recognizing where he fell in the pecking order. There are people who, to this day, feel Andrew Shaw was critical, irreplaceable, cant-win-without-him guy. Which is nonsense.

You could say guys who play his role are crucial to any and all Cup winning rosters. You don’t win a Cup without depth, and with depth comes guys who play Shaws role.

However, I have never seen anyone ever say Shaw himself was irreplaceable and we don’t win a Cup without him.

He wasnt critical, or a cant win without him, but the Hawks never replaced him. He was a great bottom 6 guy (not good) and he was definitely worth his contract and moved at the right time, only because of who we had to choose from to move because of the cap.

Hawks missed him when he left, that's as clear as day.

Exactly. Stan has acquired a precious few players with grit/physicality in their game. It is a big reason why guys like Bickell and Shaw were so important for this team in those years.

Ben Smith would be comparable to Shaw, if his career weren't derailed by injuries started by Brendan Smith.

Beach, McNeal, Aliu, et al were drafted to be Bickell-type players.

Let's face it, Stan and the draft squad don't have a good feel for power forwards.......Beach and Aliu came with a suit case of troubles, McNeal just didn't seem to excel at anything......many wasted high picks here.

But then there’s Dach, hardly the consensus #3 player in his draft but it looks like they hit on him

Hogwash! Beach? That's not on Bowman, Aliu again why lay him on Bowman. McNeill was a miss, agreed, but he was rated high his draft year and Bowman did draft Danault, Saad and Shaw that same draft...so again I say HOGWASH
Kevin Hayes was a Bowman pick everyone, HAYES decided to say NO to Chicago
Did everyone not love Ryan Hartman? What's he on his fourth team now? But still Bowman doesn't know how to draft power forwards...hello Kirby Dach at #3?

Is Kirby Dach at 3 the same as Toews at 3?
Look at the Toews draft...the Hawks got no one else, now look at the Dach draft...Bowman also grabbed Vlasic, Teply, Saarela, Basse and Moberg...that's the difference
But what turned the Hawks around was the combination of Toews and Kane...so what if the Hawks luck out and get #1 and now have a Kirby Dach and ???
And again after Kane who else did the Hawks get in that draft...no one else
Hogwash!

No other franchise would have won TWO MORE Cups after trading away
Dustin Byfuglien in his prime
Andrew Ladd
Kris Versteeg
Colin Fraser
Ben Eager
Brent Sopel
and letting Niemi, Madden and Burish walk away as free agents...
Deciding to keep Hjalmarsson instead
Then the next year trading away
Brian Campbell
Troy Brouwer
Tomas Kopecky
Jack Skille
It's the acquiring of the Froliks, Handzus, Rozsivals, drafting of Saads, Shaws

I watched Battle of the Blades and man is Akim Aliu not a great skater. Like Versteeg is a lot smoother but Bickell who is also a big guy was way better and faster. That show really exposes fundamental skating skills.
