Seattle Eagles, Seattle Rainiers, and Seattle Whales just sound awkward.

Renegades sounds minor league and says nothing about Seattle.

Cougars is fine, but unoriginal even within the NHL itself. Likewise, Seals has been done already and it would be a little disrespectful to the memory of that team.

“Totems” is a nice reference but makes no sense as a group identity.

Kraken is awesome at one level, but I really think the era of singular names has come and gone at this point.

Emeralds and Evergreens are both above the Mendoza line for me, but I think it would be extremely challenging to come up with a proper logo to express either of them. It could be pulled off, but I wouldn’t count on it.

That leaves: Firebirds, Sea Lions, Sockeye

Of the three, I think Sockeye has the most upside to be something different and fun, but not stuck in an era. It gives the franchise room to be young and creative, but also with an obvious angle for adding an aggressive edge. I can imagine Seattle Sockeye merch having a cult audience of non-hockey fans, sort of like Whalers gear but without relying on the retro/hipster appeal. The other two would be easy to do “pretty well” with, but Sockeye could potentially be one of the best identities in the Big 4.

I like Firebirds and Renegades....everything else is pretty lame and is Kraken supposed to be non plural because that sounds stupid. Seriously call a team Seattle Kraken? Firebirds kind of matches the Seahawks in a way but wonder if its weird have two teams named after birds.

People who think Kraken is a dumb name what do you think of the New Jersey Devils? They were named after this cryptozoological creature:

Nj_devil_notgreyscale.png
Its a local urban legend so makes sense, besides its not thattype of devil most think of when they hear the name anyways ^^

Naming your team after a mythological norse creature doesnt make much sense on the other hand.

1. Kraken - sounds dope, fierce sea creature
2. Renegades - could use the styx, jay z feat eminem, and x ambassadors song as their theme
3. Emeralds - kinda unique I guess

I like Renegades (some type of pirate theme), Kraken or Eagles.

Surprised they didn't register the names Grunge, Boings, Star Bucks, Mini Softs or Amazons! ;)

Other names that would have been good; Sasquatch or Dragons.

I agree with most of this. What's the plural of Kraken, anyway? But I think it still works with the idea of one creature (team) with many tentacles (players). Ok, maybe that's a stretch. Still, if you don't like Kraken, you just don't like fun.

I have a hard time with Firebirds. It's too 80's for me. I can only imagine the logo, in an 80's font, featuring a mullet-sporting hockey player with his hot rod.

Emeralds & Evergreens I like partially FOR the logo possibilities. I really don't need to see another logo with an animal's head / body. My favorite logos tend towards the abstract, and I think there's a lot to work with in either case.

If they go with Sockeyes, my objection about another animal's head / body is off, just so long as they go with something that really looks like a sockeye salmon, and not a "fierce" salmon with a hockey stick or something.

I've seen people suggest "Evergreens", "Supersonics" and "Lumberjacks". To me, those just sound clunky, why not simplify them? Something like "Seattle Greens" or "Seattle Sonics" or "Seattle Jacks"?

Ended up voting "Rainiers", don't know why but I kind of like it. I also like "Totems", but I can understand why that could be problematic.

Username SportDrawn has made some gorgeous Seattle-themed hockey jersey sketches. I especially like the Lumberjacks jersey.

'Evergreens' could actually lead to some interesting environmental slogans/campaigns: "Go Green!" :naughty:

That would actually be a great idea.

I honestly don't understand all thi slove for Kraken... It as absolutely nothing to do with Seattle or even with North-America.

Calling a team the Cyclopes, the Centaurs or the Minotaurs would be equally weird IMO.

Do Penguins have anything to do with Pittsburgh?

A lot of people commented on the names like Sockeyes, Evergreens, Emeralds, Totems, Rainiers, ect... really show a lot of ignorance towards the Pacific Northwest and what kinds of things people up here associate with where we live.

we're not ignorant on the matter but don't care. we still think they would be stupid team names.

but it's ok. nothing off the list is worse than the mighty ducks. that's rock bottom.

look at current team names. Penguins have nothing to do with Pittsburgh or even North America, but they still use it. who cares if it has anything do with the city or area.

I don't get 54 people voted for the band that does the bird dance song. what ever. they call it the emeralds, I'll just suck it up.

What about Timber or Lumberjacks? Would fit nicely with the city's history at least
The MLS team just down the road in Oregon is already called Portland Timbers. Unlikely Seattle's new hockey team would take the name of Seattle's biggest soccer rival.

Totems is a ****ing awesome name, but it's 2018 and today's tissue soft politically correct culture means you can't come within 200 feet of anything that sounds like you're co-opting native American culture. It's the best name on the list and it has 20 years of history in the city, but it has 0% chance of being picked.

I like the Sockeyes.

Cougers would be good but that's Washington State's mascot. Evergreens is too close to the Stanford Trees (and the Stanford logo with the evergreen). It's better than Cougers bc at least Stanford is in a different state but IMO anyone who follows the Pac-12 would think of Stanford if the logo was an evergreen. Plus it's kind of close to the Portland Timbers.

Totems would be controversial. I always have mixed feelings when a Utah player (who is not a member of the Ute tribe) comes on during intermissions (when the Pac-12 plays its player blurbs) to talk about how proud they are to represent the Ute tribe.Utah has the Ute tribe's blessing but it still feels like maybe they shouldn't be talking about representing a group of ppl who they aren't really connected to except by attending University of Utah. Seals would remind ppl of the Oakland/California Seals.

Kraken seems to have no connection to Seattle. How do ppl there feel about the Emeralds? It's unique.

Totems is the name of the WHA team that was originally set to join the NHL in 67, but they didn't pay the expansion fees and the NHL moved on.

Kraken kind of makes sense. Jerry Bruckheimer is the head financier of the Seattle Team, and he is a well-known producer. One of his biggest properties is the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, where the Kraken was popularized.
