"Scott Morrow is one of the most gifted players I have worked with during my time as head coach at UMass," said Carvel. "His abilities on the ice helped us win a lot of hockey games but more importantly he worked diligently to develop his all-around game on the ice, which has prepared him to move on an be an NHL hockey player. I look forward to watching Scotty impress crowds at the next level like he did for our fans over the past three years."

Pfft. Just coach speak. I doubt Carvel even coached many gifted players at UMASS, much less any gifted defensemen.

I could see them going with a veteran 3D opposite Morrow and then go Orlov-Pesce or Orlov-Chatfield as the second pair.

Or they could even let Chatfield walk and play Skjei-Morrow. Nothing would surprise me.

…ok, Cole-Morrow on the third pairing would surprise me.
TJ Brodie seems like a perfect candidate. Strong defensively, provides little offense. Probably could use some easier matchups

You know we are having a little fun with your honest assessment and not saying it’s wrong.
Of course I do, I’m trying to have fun with it too.

I also know that thanks to me giving that assessment pretty much every time the kid does something right there’s going to be an Ufko joke or a not particularly subtle side comment!

I feel like Cpt America in the second Avengers movie after he tells people to watch their language and they call him out….

“that’s not going away anytime soon…..”.

I'm sorry but that pesky $350k Schedule A Performance Bonus is insulting bullshit, and it would serve the Canes right if it came back to bite them in the RFA* negotiations.

* He won't qualify as legit RFA if his first season gets expedited with less than 10 professional games played, in which case he can only be signed by Canes when his ELC expires.

First SPC Signing Age Eligible for Group 2 Free Agency
18 - 21 3 years professional experience
22 - 23 2 years professional experience
24 or older 1 year professional experience

For the purposes of this Section 10.2(a), a Player aged 18 or 19 earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more NHL Games in a given NHL Season, and a Player aged 20 or older (or who turns 20 between September 16 and December 31 of the year in which he signs his first SPC) earns a year of professional experience by playing ten (10) or more Professional Games under an SPC in a given League Year.
(c) Players With Fewer Than Three Years of Professional Experience.
Any Player with fewer than the required years of professional experience set forth in Section 10.2 shall have no right to Free Agency except as provided in this section. Upon expiration of such a Player's SPC, the Club to whom the Player was last under SPC shall be entitled to make that Player a Qualifying Offer under the terms and conditions set forth in Section 10.2(a)(ii) above. A Club which makes this Qualifying Offer will have the exclusive right to negotiate with any such Player. In the event no such Qualifying Offer is made, the Player shall immediately become an Unrestricted Free Agent pursuant to Section 10.2(a)(iv) above.

He was stuck between a rock and a hard place being a November baby when signing a deal and avoiding the 10.2c

Seems to me he's trading contract flexibility for that $800k he'll receive this season. Earning the performance bonus, assuming he makes the team (something of a long shot given what we know about Rod) doesn't seem like a long shot....not sure how much he gets for hitting the goals (think he's eligible for up to 4).

He will not get all that. Base Salary is paid twice a month I believe, and he will be paid this year only the portion applicable to his actual time on the roster. So, a small fraction.

Would he have been better off financially by holding out until the summer and being a free agent or by signing now he accelerates his ability to get the first big contract?

Also, I would think Canes have both openings plus perhaps a good reputation for defensemen (although perhaps not the best in developing very young defensemen).

He has another year before he could be a free agent.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the earliest he could have signed with someone else as a free agent was August 2025.

Didn’t Cory L say that since he finished his degree in 3yrs he was eligible to be ufa this coming summer?

Still don’t know if that was the best pathway for him. I wonder that if we had longer term d slots filled up he would have pulled a Fox

and @chaz4hockey (so I don't have to quote both messages). Doesn't make sense though based on my understanding (which could be wrong). I thought it was 4 years, not based on graduation.

EDIT: Looks like I may be wrong based on my next post about the CBA?

@Lempo ?

Here's what the CBA says:

(i) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.

So (i) talks about his class graduating, not the individual.

For purposes of the above provisions, the term "graduation of his college class" shall mean the class with which the Player is scheduled to graduate during his final semester of attendance (as opposed to his matriculating class (the class with which he is expected to graduate as of the date of his original enrollment)). For purposes of clarity, a Player's graduating class may change during his tenure in college.

Based on that, it seems like Cory's tweet may be correct if I read this right.
