If Manny Malholtra is the best San Jose gets attracting difference makers for their being a “destination” I’m not sure that is proving your point very well. Especially considering the highest profile UFA signings in the last decade were an aging Paul Martin (for a bit of an overpay with a year more than should have been needed) and a similar situation in Joel Ward. Hardly the cream of the crop.

In regards to the trades, it’s not like those players have the pick of any team to determine where they land - in Heatley’s case, it’s not like the entire league lined up to pay the cost and he chose San Jose. Likely he was given a small handful of teams and chose as he did for his own reasons.

Additionally, immediate exits by Guerin, Campbell, and before that Belfour doesn’t exactly paint a picture of a destination franchise.

My point being, I’m not sure one could really argue Wilson had his pick of top players to sign at team friendly deals and didn’t take advantage which is what your original post implies. There’s plenty to knock Wilson for on his recent stewardship of the org without pretending this is one of them. In so much as you could credit San Jose for being a destination, you’d also have to grant Wilson credit for making it so with the success he presided over and the way he has run the org and treated players (again, I personally wouldn’t make the case SJ is a destination franchise.)

They also offered Tavares $13-14 million/year and he said no.

I don't get the "destination" thing either. Who has ever demanded a trade there or taken less to sign there in free agency?

You missed Vegas.

:sarcasm:

 they ran him out of that town faster than Bugsy Siegel after he tried to cheat the casino.

if he bet on ANY NHL games he is done for the season and the Sharks probably void his contract.

Good chance they could make him pay back his salary from this year (if its proven he bet on games in 2021)

Yeah. I wasn’t going to mention Tavares, because he probably was always going to Toronto (pajamas and whatnot) - and with hindsight it’s easy to see the Sharks enthusiasm to sign him was excellent leverage to up the offer from Toronto. Hard to blame Wilson there, he shot his best shot, it didn’t work out. It’s interesting to think what the Sharks would have looked like with Tavares and the traded players and picks instead of Karlsson, considering they needed a high end center way more than they needed another offensive dman.

My point was, players don't really take discounts to play there / they aren't a "destination team" (much like you said). & no elite free agents have signed there. Tavares being an example, if he was going to sign there it would have cost them full price. He was only going to take a discount for Toronto, for obvious reasons.

JT signed for a discount? Really?

Ya man, San Jose was willing to go 13.5 if I am recalling the situation correctly. Dude left like 15 million plus on the table to play in Toronto.
Damn I thought 11 was way too much, which it’s really proving to be the case. If the Leafs could move JT for Kane that would sure fix that mistake.

kind of proves that being a free agent destination will always cost you in the long run. Great player but Sharks fans should thank their lucky stars he didn’t sign that albatross. His contract in Toronto is boat anchor enough ..

There were several players in late 2000s/early 2010s who signed for way less than market dictated. Manny Malhotra signed for pennies when he was a top FO player in league In a bottom 6 role.

Also, UFA is not the only way a team becomes a “destination.” There were quite a few players who waived their limited NTCs to land in SJ when they were pretty sought after: Heatley and Guerin to name a couple.

I’m sure I’m forgetting others, too. But yeah, they were a destination.
I burst out laughing at this. We can retain great players because they like the area/organization, but the Sharks are not a top UFA destination. Never have been.

Was wondering about how the old “innocent till proven otherwise” argument - which is all too often neglected in the court of public opinion, let alone these boards - would work, but it’s just not gonna fly here. I hate to say it but this will be a test case for the league in more ways than 1. The league and PA have their work cut out.
With all the crap that is constantly swirling around Kane the problem is either the restaurants, team mates, nightclubs, Casinos, food vendors, etc etc etc or is it just Kane. Seems to me there is one common denominator. Good enough for me. I don’t need a court of law to reach an opinion.

Ya it’s getting very very hard to maintain the attitude of not judging him unless you walk a mile in his shoes and all that jazz. Just more and more and more stories of him doing inexcusable things that make him look like he is a POS. It’s getting hard to not read into all these stories and pass judgement as there is one after another after another

I am a leafs fan and I am thrilled that Tavares is a leaf.
He is a fantastic player in every regard and has been so every season of his career. The leafs have collectively struggled in the playoffs as a team but I don’t put that on Tavares alone.
His contract is absolutely not an anchor. Losing him would be crippling for the leafs.
Will he still be worth his money for all four of his remaining years of his contract? That remains to be seen.
