He's ranked right about where the Oilers look like they will be picking (Around 20-22) by Button.

Button's ranking isn't necessarily a reflection of even how he thinks the draft will unfold. Button wasn't high on Jake Virtanen in his draft year, but in his mock draft Button still had Virtanen going to Vancouver at #6.

Bob McKenzie's survey of scouts is usually a better barometer for where prospects might go: http://www.tsn.ca/patrick-has-decided-edge-in-tsn-hockey-mid-season-draft-ranking-1.661533

6. Mississauga Steelhead hard-shooting winger Owen Tippett, who also happens to be the cousin of Tampa prospect and London Knight Mitchell Stephens. Tippett's range of votes was from three to 13.

No way a guy like Tippett slip to 20th... Button is fake news. Tippett does have his flaws but the kid's got an NHL shot, good skating, and scoring instinct.

I'd rather a center for the Devils (N. Patrick, Hischier, Vilardi, CM), but won't complain if we end up with Tippett.

This Button guy must be a big joke. 20 to 22?! Easily a top 10 pick. Can't take this guy serious...

Button was similarly down on Jake Virtanen during his draft year. Again, don't misconstrue his personal list as a mock draft. Even with Virtanen ranked in the 40s on his list, Button had Virtanen going #6 in his mock draft. Button just isn't as high on Tippett's game translating.

If we ever got to see an actual NHL team's draft list, I think you'd be surprised how different it is from most public lists.

Edit: Happened to rewatch a recent segment where Button did a quick mock draft for the non-playoff clubs. And he had Tippett going #6 to Carolina. I think we've all had instances (whether it be NHL, NBA, NFL) when we knew certain guys were going top 10 but you didn't want your team to be the ones who took them.

The IQ issue is important, however, it's probably more important for centers and defensemen. If he can turn into a 40 goal player, you may have to forgive his lack of hockey smarts.

These stuff are usually overblown aswell, how does one really quantify hockey IQ?

Chychrun was said to have weak hockey IQ last year aswell which is why he dropped, look at him in the NHL now.

In Tippett's case it is a lack of awareness of where to pass to or where to be in regards to the cycle. Which is why he is so dependent on generating his offence off the rush. While he's a good skater, he's not an Ovi (in his early years he had the best first 3 strides in the league) or McDavid like skater who will blow past guys at the next level.

Chychrun's issues were trying to do too much to justify his draft standing. Kept on over-skating until he ran out of options. In Arizona he is back to playing a much simpler game.

Is he a Phil Kassel comparable? Phil the thrill had some defensive defects. But in a weak draft like this wouldn't mind picking up a sniper that is at least 6'2 204 will probably top out at 6'3 220

Phil's vision is consistently slept on. Phil has much higher hockey IQ and is a much better passer.

They both have back-checking issues, are fast and have great shots, but the comparisons end there. I'd be very surprised if Tippett ends up anywhere near Phil. More likely he tops out as a frustrating 30 goal/20 assist guy you put in your middle 6.

Phil is a better playmaker and a better passer.

Tippett is more physical.

Actually hoping the Devils take him, simply for the fact that him and Michael McLeod reunited would be pretty sick. It's too bad Mississauga's coach wants to spread the offence and doesn't have the two playing together at the moment.

Chemistry in Junior doesn't always translate to chemistry at the pro level though. People were all excited for Hall and Henrique to be reunited, and that hasn't really worked out.

Watching Oshawa vs Mississauga tonight. Tippett just doesn't look all that special to me right now. Michael McLeod is his clear superior.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. That said, I think Tippett is playing hurt right now.

McLeod should look better, he is a year older.

Like other draft picks this year, he is all over the map on where he could go.
