I don't recall Semin ever having the desire to go as hard to the net as Tippett does.
He also has nowhere near the puck skills Semin has. He's a very direct player with great speed and size. It is much closer to a young Bill Guerin in regards to how he plays offensively, although Tippett isn't as physical.

On a nutty goal per game pace now.
His raw tools have always been amazing, very few have that size, speed and shot combo. There was a reason many thought he was the best player in the 2015 OHL draft. The question has always been his IQ, but he seems to be getting into good spots for scoring chances and is converting.

He entered the year on a fair amount of top 5 lists, but slipped after a not so great showing at the Hlinka, it will be interesting to see if he can climb back up.

12 goals, 5 assists, 17 points in 12 games so far this season.

Three more goals and points to match last season's totals.

Here are eight of his goals this season:

The Bastian Mcleod Tippett line was dominant in the first. Mcleod and Tippet specifically were all over the puck. Like dogs on a bone. Kitchener had nothing to stop them and Mississauga's coach was essentially playing them every second shift.

Tippet has good speed, good hands, and an excellent snap shot. He struggled at making plays in transition and at high speed, but when they were set up in the ozone Kitchener was unable to contain him. Somewhat stopped playing with tenacity after the first. Maybe he felt his night was over after producing the teams two goals. Ive been to a few Steelheads games and i always go away feeling like he is their best player.

This is a player that reminds me of a Jeff Carter light. Very capable of playing in traffic, very capable of making an offensive play, and very capable of scoring anywhere on the ice. He will rise in the rankings before seasons end.

Has two goals 30 minutes in vs Erie tonight. He still does things that are frustrating, but he is scoring at a ridiculous rate right now. He has 14 goals in his last 9 games.

Should be getting way more attention and is a better prospect than Tolvanen IMO. Had 2G+1A tonight to give him 23G+14A in 29 games on the year. Reminds me of Corey Perry with a little bit of Kessel

Perry and Kessel are pretty much opposite players. The only thing they've got in common is that they have great shots.

How's Tippett's skating? Hopefully closer to Kessel's than Perry's.

Apparently it's top-notch: "Most notable of which is his explosive speed and fantastic skating abilities. He has the ability to reach top speed in just a few strides, while using his wheels to turn defenders inside out on the rush. The mobility and agility present in his game allow him to manoeuvre at high speeds while keeping his head on a swivel in search of fellow teammates."

That's why I said they're a mix aka hybrid. He plays like Perry but not quite as physical but is a better skater like Kessel but no where near as soft. Meet in the middle and you get Tippett, not that hard of an idea.

The long-term projection for this kind of tool-reliant, power winger really depends on their hockey IQ. While there are some highly-touted players who turn out as expected, there are many who do not.

Craig Button has him rated #17 on his current list; he started at #29 on Craig's September list.

93LEAFS compares him to Bill Guerin. The danger with players who appear to resemble Guerin at the junior level is that their career trajectory is very difficult to read -- they may be the next Bill Guerin, or they may be just one of several who never met expectations. Players with this skill set tend to have question marks with regards to their ability to translate those skills to the NHL level, so it is easy to understand why some scouting services are still slightly hesitant about Tippett.

A good example of a highly-touted Bill Guerin type is Jack Skille. He was drafted seventh overall in 2005.

What kind of style does this kid play? Who would you compare him too? What type of NHL numbers do you think he will post? Where should he be drafted?
Guerin is a good comparison to start with.
Skille is a big guy with good o up side and plays in corners well. Guerin, Tkachuk with lil more speed. A talented power forward.
My comparison has been Ryan Smyth. It fits better than Guerin IMO. He has great leadership qualities and good speed just like him.
Will he be able to get Ryan Smyth, or Guerin like numbers(how many points, and how many goals do you say?)? Is he a future captain? First line potential?
I think he's more like Bill Guerin personally. He's probably a bit more well-rounded than Guerin, but possesses good size, a powerful skating stride, and a wicked shot off the wing. I'd project him to be a 30-35 goal guy at the NHL level.
Im praying he falls to #10 for us...
Put it this way...if Skille is still on the board at 10(I don't think he will be...I think the Sens will grab him), the Canucks need to grab him and run.

And yes, Guerin is a very good comparison.
I thought Skille was a LW......

But whatever. I'll be happy with whatever Nonis ends up selecting, as long as the phrase "The kid reminds me of a young Trevor Linden" doesn't pop up.

If the Canucks really wanted Skille, I'm sure they can find a way to trade up a couple slots to guarantee that they have him.
hehe yea, I rather hear the phrase "The kid reminds me of a young Pavel Bure" instead.

He's big and natural. He has huge upside. He's gonna be the kind of player you will need when you're gonna go to the war. He has a good heavy shot and accurate. He likes to deliver and throwing big hits. It's just a matter of time when you gonna see it put it all together.
I love his game. IMO he's going to be a star.
Count me among his fans. I also think he will have a very good NHL career and will be a quality leader on the ice.
He doesn't posses the Guerin's speed, but he has a similar package in terms of scoring blistering shot. He reminds me Scott Hartnell 6 years ago.
great comparison there. I didn't really get the Guerin comparisons to be honest.. Skille is a more offensively talented Hartnell.
Canucks fans saw Skille score two terrific goals yesterday that really demonstrate his individual skill.

In assessing tool-reliant junior players such as Tippett, be sure to prioritize their hockey IQ. Sometimes, the player relies mostly on their advanced skill set at the junior level to produce and then has trouble adapting when their skill set no longer offers a significant advantage. If the player has the hockey IQ to adapt their abilities, they can develop and learn to use their skills effectively; if not, the player may disappoint.

8. Owen Tippett: The Mississauga Steelhead winger has NHL speed, an NHL shot and the physical tools to play a strong drive-the-net game.

He is, however, considered by scouts to be a little one dimensional. That is, when he's putting the puck in the net on a regular basis, he's obviously highly effective, as any player would be. But when he's not scoring goals, he's not as likely to be contributing in other ways.

He had only one goal at the Hlinka tourney this summer and some of the scouts came away hoping for more from Tippett.

...
If the tools don't translate, there might not be much else there.

I think a MacKinnon comparison would be close as well. Probably not as explosive off the top as MacKinnon but he has that same type of shot and he's not afraid to finish checks on the forecheck like MacKinnon. MacKinnon is a better playmaker, but I think the shooting, skating, hands, and physicality are similar.

Tippett should be a top 15 first rounder at least. Goals are hard to come by in the NHL and Tippett is almost at a goal per game rate in the OHL. His wrister is elite and one of the best I've seen. He has good size and skating ability to get with it, sometimes you see players who can shoot but can't skate, or are really small. He's been an elite player everywhere he's been, midget, U17, OHL, decent production at the U18s for an underager, Super Series.

Don't usually comment on non-goalies however I got the chance to watch him (and Hague) last night. One dimensional? Maybe he was back in the summer at the Ivan Hlinka, against London though he played a complete game and made a huge difference. My favourite sequence was Tippett stealing the puck in the D-Zone passing it for a breakout then joining the rush for a 2-on-1 where he drew a penalty. He's also a complete puck hound, if he wants the puck and you have it, pass it quickly or he'll take it from you.

Phil Kessel and Corey Perry see the game at a different level than Tippett does. Kessel has way better vision off the rush and finding the open man, Perry is a way better player off the cycle. He's closer to someone like Evander Kane or Virtanen style wise but with a less developed physical game.

I don't think he is a better prospect or on another tier than Tolvanen. I'd actually say its more likely Tolvanen is a tier above him. Tolvanen has better positioning and in general is a much smarter player. I'd also say his shot is probably better. He is a very quick strike type of player. Tippett has the better tools (size and skating), but his hockey-iq scares me. Too often I find his entire line devoid of playmaking and making proper reads (this can extend to the PP), he is a great player off the rush with a great shot, but so were Yakupov, Evander Kane and Virtanen. I'd say for that reason alone, Tolvanen is probably safer.

He's a way better skater than Kane or Virtanen. People have different opinions but to me Tolvanen isn't as good as Tippett. Tolvanen is the one who is one-dimensional while Tippett is rounding out his game nicely.

People still as basing their opinions of players from the start of the year

I've seen a lot of Tippett and know a lot about the Steelheads.

He also isn't a way better skater than Virtanen or Kane, he might not be better at all. Virtanen was the best skater at the CHL Top Prospects on-ice combine, ahead of players such as Ehlers. The other people to win that for there years consist of Kyrou, McDavid, and Mackinnon, with guys like Marner, Konecny, Ehlers, Chychrun, finishing top 3 in their years. I'd say its one of the better measures of skating around.

While he's rounding out what he can, his vision and awareness in the cycle game scares me to death. I don't know if its a combination of him, M. McLeod and Bastian, but I constantly see them make terrible reads off one another and either make the wrong pass or hold on to it too long.

Surprised his assist totals aren't higher. I know he is an elite scorer but I have seen him play multiple times this season and his playmaking ability is terrific too.

Now that his defensive game is also improving, I'll be surprised if he is not a top-5 pick in the end.

another 1st star tonight with 2G+1A in a 3-1 win. What's very impressive is of his 31 goals only 5 are on the pp so he's not a pp specialist like some of the high scoring chlers. To me Hischier, Vilardi and Tippett have separated themselves as the 2nd tier after Patrick

Two goals and one assist tonight in a 4-1 win against London Knights. Now he leads the OHL in goals scored with 33 goals in 39 games (Alex DeBrincat is 2nd with 32 goals in 34 games).
