If I'm being honest prior to the TDL I couldn't really envision us winning the cup. I would've said a lot needed to go right to make it.

Now we've added more Boom and Bust (who doesn't like their lineup busty) and I'm excited to see how everything fits together. I can also legit see us hoisting the cup when the dust settles.

With TDA clearing I wonder if we can bring him back next year for cheaper? I think he'd want to actually play. Still makes a good PP specialist that could play with Skjei or Slavin. Also insurance if Burns starts to fade.

Lots of questions. Can we keep skjei and guentzel. Does Kuzy actually work under RBA. What happens to KK and Drury... Will we even have a shot at Guentzel

Rentals only really work for 1 team every year, the team that wins the cup. I'm not upset that we spent that much on Guentzel, but I understand why some don't like it because it was a lot to give up, even though he does fill a pressing need.

I also get that Waddell says only so many prospects can make it to the NHL, but it's not like using those prospects for a rental is the only option, particularly has we'll have holes to fill next year. Clearly the Canes management felt that was the best use and so far, they've been right more than they've been wrong.

Is that wishy-washy enough?

My bet is Skjei and Pesce are both gone, and Teravainen as well. We should have room for every other key piece, including Guentzel. If KK is seen as Staal's successor, they will keep him instead of a 1/3 buyout and let go of someone like Noesen instead. 4th line will be something like Drury-KK-Fast. I think they'll bridge Drury, extend Chatfield for something like 3-4 years, and sign Jarvis to max-term. Necas is the wild-card, but I think he either gets 8 years or 1 year.

I was checking out your guys' cap situation and, from an outsider looking it, a lot depends on three things:
1. You have a lot of higher end dmen that are UFAs. Are you planning on bringing back both Skjei and Pesce? I have to assume they will run about $13mil combined ($7 for Pesce and $6mil for Skjei?). And you will need depth but you can pull two guys from the ranks. That's roughly $1.8mil.
2. How you guys value Necas. I have no idea what contract demands are but I assume they will be north of $6mil potentially running into the 7s.
3. What are the plans for Turbo? He seems like he's in the same boat as Guentzel - older UFA that has been a core player but do you really want to dedicate money and term to him? Especially with 3 major RFAs to sign and half your defense as UFAs.

Because after that, you need to sign Drury and Jarvis. It just doesn't leave a lot of room for Guentzel who will be looking for $9mil-ish. I didn't really factor in those last couple of depth pieces because I assumed you can pull from the ranks cheap or sign guys cheap in FA like Noesen.

Now, certainly, you can move out someone like Necas easily or even KK if you have confidence in your prospects but I'm not sure if that leaves you a better team or not?

I can't tell if you love it or absolutely loathe it and on this board there's no middle ground.

Here's my guess for lines:

Guentzel-Aho-Teravainen
Svechnikov-Kuznetsov-Necas
Martinook-Staal-Jarvis
Drury-Kotkaniemi-Noesen

Fast, Lemieux as Extras

Slavin-Burns
Skjei-Pesce
Orlov-Chatfield

DeAngelo as Extras

Kochetkov (1A)
Andersen (1B)

Martin, Raanta as Extras

My goodness. If Kuznetsov can overcome his demons and turn his game around, this is going to be a monster of a postseason team. I can't wait to see what they do.

Personally, I like having:

Svechnikov-Aho-Guentzel
Teravainen-Kuznetsov-Necas

I think Svech should remain with Aho. It also gives Aho and Guentzel a big, and physical linemate to balance them out.

Skjei and Pesce are probably both gone. If they’re back it will be at a discount to what they could get in free agency. Same story for Tuevo; I could more easily see him take a discount to stick with Aho though.
