Why do you trade Cammaleri for Jokinen straight up, no salary difference, this season?
Jokinen is a perfect systems player. He can play any forward position and can move up and down the lineup - depending on how hot he is.

Cammalleri could produce more, but he is far more 1-dimensional.

Between DeAngelo, Pionk, Pedrie, Bereglazov, Zborovskiy, Day and Sproul, I really hope we can move on from Smith by next season

Smith’s contract will may keep him in NY. I don’t think it will matter what the names you have listed do.

You don't think a team would take him for a mid-late pick? I do.

Also, money can be saved from Staal bought out and have his spot on the roster replaced by Graves/Pionk/Bereglazov.

Hayes could also be traded, especially if you assume all of Zib (obviously), Chytil, Andersson, and Nieves are on the team.

Also, your projected "cap hell" is 2 years off. Why does the cap stay the same and not go up?

Buch will also be getting a short bridge deal, just like Kreider/Miller/Hayes/every forward.

Thank you for quoting the smaller post.

For the purpose of this exercise I did not project trades and I did not increase the cap.

If a team offers a pick for Smith, the Rangers should take it. I will leave it at that.

Staal buyout is a temporary fix. While I think it may have to happen. It’s going to be a big cap penalty, especially when combined with Girardi’s. The combination is likely to neutralize whatever increase in the Salary Cap occurs. Either way I think Graves is 3rd pair LHD next season.

Anyone can be traded. I don’t think the Rangers should trade Hayes until Chytil and Andersson are more proven though. Not to mention I don’t think they extend Hayes just to trade him right away because two rookies Might be ready.

Cap Hell is two years away. They can see it clear as day so they need to plan for it. The Rangers are going to cap themselves out this summer. They simply do not have enough Cap coming off of the books to re-balance themselves. It’s a numbers game. It makes sense to move McDonagh or Zuccarello this season because they can’t keep both, and next season they are expiring. The Rangers don’t have any D that can replace McDonagh in the pipeline, and they don’t have any wingers that can replace Zuccarello either. What they can do is get more assets to better their chances at finding replacements for those players.

The reality is that if the Rangers can’t sign McDonagh, trade Smith and buyout Staal, their LHD depth chart is Skjei and Graves. That’s it. It’s not a hot take, it’s clear as day. And they will not have the Cap to find that player in Free Agency. So their choice is overpay McDonagh and give him a retirement contract by sacrificing Zuccarello, trade him, or let him walknfor nothing.

Same goes for Zuccarello. But if Nash leaves too, their second line is suddenly Hayes, Miller and...Vesey? Fast? Chytil or Andersson at wing? Again, the Rangers are capped out.

Sure they can get lucky in free agency, but they aren’t necessarily picking high enough to get a player with greater probability of making top six or top pair rapidly. This is why they need to accumulate assets.

Buchnevich is not going to take a bridge as a top line winger and power play specialist. The KHL will be on him like white on rice if the Rangers try to low ball, and he is also the one that they can least afford to lose that summer. I think best case scenario is he takes the Arvidsson deal.

Maybe the sky is falling, maybe it isn’t but the when you look there are obvious warning signs. I wouldn’t count on simply being able to figure it out. They are going to cap themselves out, and make it very hard to improve the team at the same time. They are playing with fire.

@Savant

Cap hell is always 2 years away. Its extremely hard to build a competitive team without using most of the cap, so we will always be up against it. We have made it work for 10+ years and we will make it work again.

That doesn't mean everything is fine. We still need to find creative ways to make it work, but we have A TON of options, and even more variables over that period of time.

right now its not worth pulling your hair out over because you never know what is around the corner.

so my gut tells me this teams recent run has the fire relit.

an impact trade may well be coming.

i would watch kreider, hayes, and miller as all being in play as a sweetener to a nash/zuc deal.

some big fish(es) coming back.

Who would be available that would fit this mold though. I am not seeing that guy available ghat would be worth a Zuccarello + one of those players out there.

The player I was hoping the Rangers would buy low on was RNH in the summer. He would have been a very nice compliment to the right handed Zibanejad and he plays a pretty complete game. He seems to have had a good start so I am doubtful he is available.

I think it would be incredibly dumb to trade JTM. Kreider too, barring a huge return

There are some guys around the league that I of course would trade those guys for. In saying that, I would be surprised to see them go for nothing short of a young superstar. Mackinnon? Trouba?

he was available over the summer for sure. now, not so much.

he plays a more defensive role and seems to have embraced that. he's a complete player for sure. think derek stepan with more speed.

and i would think this organization would move any of hayes, miller and CK for the right return. certainly nash and zucchini as well. but would need to return the impact pivot or scorer this team is lacking.

i think this recent run has the suits thinking "one more kick at the can" but it would be a guy who fits the "younger, faster, cheaper (maybe) and certainly better" thing.

i would watch teams like AZ, the oil and Van as probable partners. esp AZ.

MacKinnon? That would be really nice ... Top center for a long time. But the price would be high.
Trouba + B.Lemieux for JTM + Smith?

Never been a RNH fan — but he has been a bit better this year when I’ve seen him.

Spector ‘s Rumors opined yesterday that we will likely have to retain salary to move Smith

I really hope this won’t be one of those moves that is a real head scratcher a few year from now. We get away from a cap killing contract one day and then swing around and sign one that is just as bad the day after.

Smith don’t score pts and he isn’t good on the PK and we have to play him on the wrong side. It’s not that I don’t think Smith can be a good player and that he won’t come back and be a solid player for us — sooner rather than later. But that isn’t much consolidation since we made a tremendous investment in him...
