I mean, that depends on your definition of "worked," right? I'm pretty sure the retool on the fly 2004-2011 worked out incredibly well from Dolans perspective.

I think some of the were rebuilding guys are dreaming. We didn't get ourselves 20 mil in space to not try and win a championship.

i don't think we are rebuilding because we aren't smart enough to do things the right way. but how exactly do you expect them to unload the veteran players to rebuild without freeing up a ton of cap space? whether you are rebuilding or freeing up space to give shattenkirk a terrible contract, the actions to this point would look the same

My expectations over the next few weeks with this newfound cap space:
Sign one of Smith/Shattenkirk
Trade Nash
Sign Dadonov or another FA winger
Trade for Duchene, Coyle, Galchenyuk (or sign one of Gagner, Thornton, Bonino [Gagner would be my primary target in FA, shouldnt cost too much to lockup long term, and makes a very strong 2B/3A])

I like Gagner and i would like to go after him, but i see him more as a 3C/4C not a 2C/3C 5v5. He's a PP specialist who i think needs some sheltering 5v5.
I wouldn't like to have both Gagner and Hayes in our top 9 as C's. I think both need some sheltering or atleast neither can handle any kind of tougher usage IMO.

What makes Gagner so great on the PP? He had horrible PP results the three seasons prior to this one.

Oh and in this current season he had a lower points/60 and less total PP points than "awful" pp player Derek Stepan.

What happened from 1941-1969 (0 cups) is just about as relavent as what happened from 1927-1940 (3 cups). Different owners. Different management. Different coaches. Different players. Different teams. Different draft. Different free agency. In other words its pretty irrelevant when speaking about todays situation.

The 40s-60s were borked due to WWII and the league Form C draft rule. Plain and simple. Organizational futility can be measured back to the 70s but the 1 in 77 thing overstates things a lot.

Is there an NHL out clause in Hellberg's KHL contract, and if so, would he exercise it to be backup to Hank

He had 32 points at 5v5 last year AND hes great on the PP.

Gagner is an interesting option I hadn't considered. Only question is how much would he cost? On his time in CBJ, I see it differently. If you've survived Torts, you're stronger for it (if not with less life expectancy- see Girardi and Staal)

Krüger is very overrated and overpaid, i don't want him at all. Okey, maybe if we get a good asset added on, something like DeBrincat.

The Canes got Teravainen by taking Bickell. that's what the Rangers need to do - take Kruger to get a good young asset. They can do the same thing by taking Niemi.

If the asset we get is good enough then sure, i'd do it. But i'm not doing it for a meh prospect or mid rounder. I want DeBrincat or similar value in picks.

Any chance we go after (Brian) Boyle?

I doubt it, think he'll cost too much, but you never know.

Boyler is going to be 33. He was a great 4th liner with the Rangers from 26-29. Is he still the same guy though?

I like Gagner, but i would feel uneasy atleast if 2 of our 3 top-9 Centers were Hayes AND Gagner.

I'm a noted Hayes critic, but he had a great point scoring streak when Mika was hurt, but again the underlying numbers were awful. If he's going to have a consistent top-6 role, he's going to need to go back to driving possession again and playing better defense. He can't be carried by his wingers.

I'm wary about it, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. However, the biggest thing I'm worried about is his playoff no shows. People here are ******** all over Stepan's playoffs this year, but no one wants to mention that Hayes and Miller were both worse. Those are the two guys that will be relied on to be better next season, and they haven't shown up in the playoffs for 2 years now. Miller gets a little slack from me because he was pretty good in the 14-15 run, especially when he was with Brassard and Nash.

All of this posturing right now is moot though. Talking about Sam Gagner, Boyle, or any of those guys is missing the forest for the trees. I have a sneaking suspicion there's still much bigger moves to come because you don't rebuild on the fly with one move like that with Stepan. All we've done so far is move our top C and top RD (based on usage, don't take this as me saying G is our best RD because that's not my point). Lias Andersson and Anthony Deangelo are moves for 2-3 years down the road. So was getting Mika. I think we'll see a hockey type of trade with one of our younger guys. Gorton wants to make this his team, and it's slowly shaping up to be that way. I'm not opposed to signing Shattenkirk and Smith, but it's just immediately taking away the cap flexibility that Gorton just acquired. I don't think he's going to do that.

Why? Beyond the appeal of going back in time, he's older, less effective, more expensive, and is salty about leaving and his role for the team both then and going forward. I would be surprised if he'd even want to sign here, and more surprised if he was any good for us if he did. A big part of his success with us was Moore and Dorsett, who are not Fast and Puempel. He is a part of our past, not our future.
