**Today I used a real camera so feel free to check out the full resolution links at the bottom of the shot if you want a closer look (files are around 10-13 Megabytes). Most days I'll use a cheap phone cam though. Have a good one!**

Boyle Street Community Services actually owns the facility that's across the street from the construction. I volunteer there sometimes and talked to the Executive Director. They're currently in talks to "see how the city, and other interested parties can be brought together" to find a solution (or in other words pay us big bucks to leave). So although we're getting the arena, it might cost the city, or a developer, quite a bit of money to move the soup kitchen. I'm fairly confident that there's going to be a buyer between now and fall 2016.

If they truly are in it to help people, they should find it hard to turn down the opportunity to make a bigger, better soup kitchen somewhere nearby.

Good, I hope they beat it somewhere else. Politically correct or not.

Earlier this year I was looking for an apartment downtown and checked out one place in that area, excellent size and price but the three block walk back to the bus stop was the most unsafe I've ever felt in my life. Bombarded by people asking for money, had one guy spit at my feet, a crowd of homeless idiots yelling at me and some hooker yelling at me about if you whistle you're inviting birds into your head. Within a 10 minute walk. One block from the casino on the north side. It was like being in some sort of post apocalyptic horror movie.

Just like Rexall now, I'm not looking to flee the area after a game.

Nowhere close to Hastings street type atmosphere but also due to the homeless being kind of spread around in Edmonton. Some on other side of 97st. Some north of downtown, different areas. Also with it being harder to be homeless here due to climate. What we have here is for the most part quasi homeless. People with some access to food and shelter provided. Although some refuse it outright.

But problems will occur and people will want to come and go to games in what feels like a good atmosphere and area. But with now the arena bordering on a sketchy area. I have no doubt gentrification of area will occur but with the result being difficulties pushed into a different area and with that meaning in this case different neighborhoods. With those inner city neighborhoods already under so much stress and incurring so much of Greater Edmonton's social problems.

I actually do work for PCL, but i believe Arpi's got the contract for the piping

Agreed. I got the impression that they're not digging in their heels to stay and make a point about economic disparity, but rather, that they want to get paid well enough to build a better facility somewhere else. The building they're in is old and falling into disrepair. So I'm actually quite encouraged here.

The whole area north of the new arena site needs to be redeveloped. It's not just the site of Boyle Street Community Services that brings undesirables to the area but also the Hope Mission is just a couple of blocks north along with an overall sketchy look and feel over there. Essentially the city is building its new crown jewel in the area it decided to concentrate the less fortunate. But now that the arena is under construction, the asking price for the land in this area is going to go sky high. It's looking like another expensive solution for the planning mistakes of the past. So unless you start walking south towards Jasper Ave after a game, you might still feel the need to flee the area for some time.

Would love to get on that project, gotta be a little pipefitting to be done in there.

Going to be keeping my eye on the call out in the future to see if there are any dispatches.

Maybe if somebody tells the Oilers that they're not allowed to play in this building unless they finish tenth or better in the Western standings next year, they'll have some added incentive to play competent hockey next season.

Tell them that they get to stay in Rexall for 2015-16 otherwise.

Why don't they just leave the soup kitchen there. Make it the world's fanciest soup kitchen and hire top end chef's. Make it so good that the general public can eat there. Maybe have the proceeds go to homeless shelters or something.

Just an idear.

BTW: Great looking photos Slicknitty! Keep up the good work.
