Like I've said before, I am pretty sure Reimer will have SOMEONE offer him a starter's job this offseason. I expect it's likely he'd take one were it offered to him. So, much as I would also love to run with a Jones/Reimer tandem next season, it's probably unlikely.
The main reason I could see him not doing so is if he didn't like the team he'd have to be playing behind. He just got out from being the unappreciated backstop behind a terrible team in a media fishbowl, I can't imagine he's fired up and eager to go right back to that kind of environment. I kind of get the impression he's really enjoying having a quality team and D-core in front of him for what is basically the first time in his career.
So, if he gets an offer from Calgary or Carolina, he might turn them down if he doesn't think the teams will be competitive. I have no idea what teams will be needing a starting goalie in 2017, but if there's a good team that will need someone then, I could definitely see Reimer taking a 1 year deal to stay with us, and then signing somewhere good as a starter in the 2017 offseason.
As for Stalock, I don't think anyone is disputing that playing a lot might well translate to improvement in play. However, improvement doesn't mean he'd actually reach the level of a quality NHL starter. Or even a quality backup. He wasn't even playing at an AHL backup level, so even if he improved a fair bit, he'd still be bad for the NHL team. On top of that, how many more losses would we have had if we were starting him regularly as we waited for him to show improvements? I think it's very likely we'd be outside the playoffs right now if we'd tried to play Stalock for 20+ games this season, even if he did start improving. Obviously, the Marlies didn't even see enough potential or promise there to keep him around the team. I feel bad for the guy, he seemed like a great teammate, and he had that tragic injury, but his career in North America is absolutely done. Deservedly.
