Founded just one year later, 1996.

Both those teams have the same owner today too, which is weird.

So what was said about the expansions before the teams officially took the ice, such as the early 90s with the Sharks, Sens, and Bolts, and then maybe some of the later ones, such as Atlanta, Nashville, Minnesota and Columbus. (Though by the time Minny and the CBJ played their first games, message boards as we know them today were replacing the news groups.)

"3. Glow-puck. What a crazy thing to oppose. It is a very real fact that
hockey on television is harder to watch than in person because of puck
visibility problems. USA TV standards are low resolution because they
were set so early. Because of this, there are frames when the puck does
not even register. I think glow puck is a pretty clever fix until that
glorious day when we can have hi-def TV."

That is a good find. I remember FoxTrax was so laughed at that even David Letterman would have "DaveTrax" and show a blue dot on his head as he sat at the desk.

Daigle may go will go number 1, but he's been a no show since Christmas.
If anyone deserves to go number 1, it's Pronger. I would not be surprised
if Yashin is going to be the dominant rookie next season.

The most striking thing in this thread to me so far is how little people know about a tool they use every day.

Denis Savard post in 1983.

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/net.sport.hockey/HpxJ_RNzaG4

How many people out there have seen Dennis (Denis?) Savard of
the Chicago Blackhawks play? Is there anybody out there who
would agree that he possesses the finest fundamental skills
of any player in the NHL? Excuse me for being presumptious
but I think that given some work on his defensive game and
his acquisition of some Gretzky-like head skills, he could
surpass Gretzky as the league's virtuoso performer. Only
God and Gretzky knows what makes Gretzky go but whatever it
is, there must be a few more people capable of doing it in this
world.

And a fan doesn't like the Pens new jersey in '93.

People will be gouging their eyes out after seeing these new uniforms!
The black uniform is a crime! (IMHO). It has "PITTSBURGH" written
diagonally across it, just like....just like, well I can't even bring
myself to say it, but you get the idea.

The stripes on the uniform are a little too uncoventional for my taste.

Maybe we could kidnap Howard Baldwin and tattoo the old logo on his face?
Just kidding.

Post from a guy who was watching the 1992 NHL Entry Draft live on TSN.

Also announced at the Montreal meetings is that former assistant coach
Alpo Suhonen (Don Cherry is gonna love it!) has returned to the Jets
organization. When Bob Murdoch won the coach of the year award in 1990,
it is widely believed that the actual great motivator of the team was
Suhonen, and his return to Finland following the 1989-90 season was
partially responsible for the Jets' fall the following year.

Very intresting piece of information (if true?) that I had no idea. It has always been a big mystery to me how Suhonen from all coaches managed to be the first European head coach in NHL.

Thanks for linking this.

Some interesting things I've read so far

Lemieux and Lafleur comparisons were very commonplace
Gordie Howe seemed to be the consensus best player ever with Orr and Rocket Richard coming in afterwards.
People doubted Gretzky and thought he couldn't win
So many people *****ed about the 80s as a quality of league. It seems like every second post is about how good the O6 NHL was.

Wow. The term "journeyman winger" was being used in 1986!?

Yes, and we had electricity, too.

These are great, I wish my conversations from those eras were recorded somehow. I know I doubted Mario Lemieux for the first couple of years, and would have put every penny I had into betting Bryan Fogarty was the next great defenseman.

People doubted Gretzky? Yes, and they hated him. People around here think the Crosby and Ovechkin hate is bad....it was worse for Gretzky.
