1990:
I think it would be very cool if the NHL adopted the shoot-off that we saw at the Goodwill games. I mean, there's nothing worse than paying big $$$'s to go to a game and it ends in a tie. Hell, that's like kissin' you sister. The shoot-off is very exciting. Agreement?

1991:
What they listed in the paper here last night as having been discussed was Lemieux and Stevens to Quebec for Lindros + cash. I don't know how much of this is rumor or how serious anyone is about the deal. I hear 5 Pens rumors a week around here, I don't take them seriously until the ink is on the paper.

1992:
Jagr may be the best player in the league, in your opinion, but he'll
never surpass Peter Statny as the Chech hockey player to come over.

I just noticed that this thread I linked to was started by Bill Meltzer, who blogs for Hockeybuzz.com now an co-wrote a book about Pelle Lindbergh, and has posts by Pierre Lebrun. It could be different Meltzers and Lebruns, but I doubt that. Were they active journalists back then?

Hah, good find!

Been a few years since this has been bumped. Thought those that didn't see this before may find it interesting. And maybe we can come up with new(old) finds!

Post about a rumored Wendel Clark for Claude Lemieux and Shayne Corson trade in 1990.

There was a lot of talk about the Clark for Lemieux and Corson
trade in the papers here, but fortunately it didn't go through. If Clark
was healthy it might not have been too bad a trade but Clark has missed
most of the past 2 or 3 seasons. Corson on the other hand has missed
less than 20 games the past three seasons, and he just finished his best
season of his career (31-44-75, 144 PIM and +33). Still, a healthy Clark can
be one of the most effective players in the league. As for Corson, many of the
ten thousand amateur Habs GM's in Montreal have been saying is that he couldn't
bring his game up notch during the playoffs. I think this is a rather unfair
assessment of Corson: Richer didn't get the Habs past the Bruins, not even Roy
could have done it. I hate to say it, but the Bruins were very, very good.
Hats off to the Bruins for their performance this past season. (Next season,
I put it back on again :)

Discussion on the Billy Smith/Curt Fraser stick swinging incident and suspension from 1985.

According to the newspaper Billy Smith received a 6 games suspension for
his stick "incident" with Curt Fraser of the Black Hawks. I don't have the
article here with me but apparently the league officials agreed with
Smith that he was "protecting" his area of the crease and did not
deliberately attempt to injure. And then they turned around and gave him
a suspension for stick swinging. What a strange situation. The Black Hawk
management were upset at the length of the suspension thinking that it
should have been longer. The league's decision was based partly on Smith's
defense that Fraser had taken at least 3 runs at him during the game.
I really don't know what to say about any of this since I haven't seen a
replay or anything. I have been an Islander fan for about 13 years so I
have seen my share of Smith's antics - and been forced to defend him too
many times. He is a *good* goalie when he decides to play. Lots of teams
make the mistake of trying to get him riled up by taking runs at him, and
then he stones them the rest of the game. Sort of like in the old days when
people took runs at Frank Mahovelich ("the Big h'Em" as he was known in his
Montreal days) - they would wake up the sleeping giant. Maybe people should
just leave Smith alone ... and he will leave them alone.

What the hell is Serge Savard thinking?

What the hell is Serge Savard thinking? Brian Bellows for Mark Bureau.
Okay you cut the payroll but certainly Bellows is worth more than Bureau.
Over the last year we've seen the exodus of team leaders such as Muller,
Carbonneau, and now Bellows, as well as promising players like Haller,
Desjardins, LeClair, Mattieu Schneider and even Jimmy Montgomery. What
Serge has brought in return Mark Lamb, Mark Bureau, Pierre Turgeon, and
Vladamir Malakhov. Not too good, especially when the farm team is not
that well stocked due to many poor drafts in a row.

Anyone heard lately from Brent Bilodeau, David Wilkie, Turner
Stevenson,Lindsay Vallis, and Eric Charron the 1st round picks from
1988-1992. In 1987 Savard took Andrew Cassels first, but he's in
Hartford in a trade that netted the Habs a second round choice, Valeri
Bure who with Saku Koivu are the only hot prospects around. In 1986 Mark
Pederson was first and the year before that Jose Charbonneau...not very
productive.

Even Sam McMaster might be able to make a good deal, but before he does
Serge baby, I'd never steer you wrong, I've got this bridge it runs
between Brooklyn and Manhattan, it's hardly been used and all I want is a
goalie and maybe a defenseman...

Mario Lemieux to Montreal?

In a report from AP in todays paper comes a rumor that says Mario is fed
up in Pittsburgh (I would be as well if the people paying me $42million
actually wanted me to give up golf and play hockey) and wants to be traded
and the probable destination is Montreal. According to the article
Montreal has offered John Leclair,Brian Bellows And Lyle Odelein as a
package but Pittsburgh wants Kirk Muller.
If there is any hockey left in Mario and I think his problem is one of
desire ,and would be rejuvenated in a place like Montreal, then he has to
be worth a truckload more than that package.
Montreal could afford him, lots of money and a new arena just around the
corner, but how would you sell a trade like this in Pittsburgh especially
if you take the dogs being offered.
The report also mentions that he has spent much of the summer competing in
various charity and celebrity golf tournaments, often playing up to 36
holes a day.(Good back therapy).

Lyle Odelein is an awfully good and underrated defenseman...

...considering Mario's health, that isn't such a bad deal.

The way you sell such a trade is you tell the fans that Mario
has given them 10 good years and 2 Stanley Cups, and that he
deserves a chance to play where he wants to play.

If Savard makes that deal hes crazy. Muller is going to stay a Canadian.
However I think Pittsburg would do just fine getting Bellows, Leclair,
and Odelein to replace Mario who is only playing 20 odd games a year now, if
any next year. Muller has had two very decent seasons, and was outstanding
in both previous playoffs. He was the only foward to show-up and play every
game in Montreal's last years first round exit IMHO. As much as I would like
to see Mario in a Habs sweater, I would not trade Muller for Mario, Hull,
Robatille, or just about anyone else. I might trade him for Bure and a
Vancouver first-round pick. ;} (I am not implying one-to-one deals for
the named players).

If only..

Fun stuff. I first used the Internet in January/February 1995. The World Wide Web was in existence, but we mainly still learned Gopher at the time (which, in about 6 months, was obsolete). Internet use in Calgary then was probably only available at the university, but by 1996 it was available in our off-campus apartment for free (paid for by the university), and by 1997 it was becoming an everyday thing, used by the public.

I am wondering what was the very first NHL hockey discussion forum via World-wide Web?.... lost in the sands of time, I guess.

Hah, this is fantastic. I just saw a post where one poster was asking another poster if they knew how many points one of the top prospects had scored that season, and my initial thought was "Why wouldn't you just Google it?". Having lived most of my life with information like this right at my fingertips, it's totally bizarre to think about how things were before the internet as we know it.

It's also pretty funny how frequently they talk about reading things in the papers. I think my grandpa's the only person I know who still buys real, physical newspapers.

Thanks for bumping, OP. This is good stuff.

I laughed pretty hard at the Habs fan in 1994 who said he wouldn't trade Muller for Mario, Hull, Robitaille or anyone else and would maybe consider Bure + a 1st. I wonder what he thought when Muller was dealt a year later.

I guess fans have always overvalued their favorite players. It's not just an HF thing. ;)

During this period, reference books like the THN yearbook were absolutely indispensable. That was about the only place you could easily find things like career and year-by-year scoring totals for every player, unless you were really into hockey cards or something.

Who will be the best player between 1996-2000?

Who do you think will be the best player between 1996-2000?

Contenders:
Eric Lindros
Jaromir Jagr
Mario Lemieux
Peter Forsberg
Paul Kariya
Pavel Bure
Sergei Federov
Wayne Gretzky
Mark Messier
Martin Brodeur
Patrick Roy
Jeremy Roenick
Alexander Mogilny
Domanik Hasek
Joe Sakic

I know I probably left someone off the list that should be on it like
Saku Koivu or Eric Daze. But those players will develop and I think that
their prime will be past the year 2000. Maybe Teemu Selanne too.

I think that Peter Forsberg or Eric Lindros will be the best.

I think that this is a gimme
Paul Kariya...If anyone doubts this,I doubt that he has seen Kariya...he
has had _noone_ to play with until selanne went to CA. Federov is
better now, but Kariya is getting better and better

: Eric Lindros <--------LINDROS TIED FOR 1ST
: Jaromir Jagr <--------JAGR TIED FOR 1ST
: Mario Lemieux <-------WON'T LAST FOR FOUR MORE YEARS AT THE LEVEL HE
WAS AT THIS YEAR
: Peter Forsberg <------OUTSIDE CHANCE.... HAVEN'T SEEN HIM PLAY ENOUGH
: Paul Kariya <---------SAME AS ABOVE.... DON'T SEE MANY DUCKS OR AV'S GAMES
: Pavel Bure <---------ONLY IF HE COMES BACK FROM HIS INJURY AND SCORES
60 AGAIN.... BUT HE WILL ALWAYS BE A DEFENSIVE LIABILITY
: Sergei Federov <------GREAT DEFENSIVELY... PROBABLY THE BEST ON THIS
LIST BUT NOT OFFENSIVE ENOUGH
: Wayne Gretzky <-------ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!!? GRETZ WAS GREAT BEFORE,
BUT HE IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOP TIER OF PLAYERS NOW.
: Mark Messier <---------SAME HERE
: Martin Brodeur

My guess is that Forsberg and Lindros will lead their respective teams
further on in their careers and we'll probably see them battle it out
in the finals quite a few times...Jagr is awsome but he lacks somewhat
defensively and I dont think he is such a leader. Kariya will go far
for the ducks....

If we're strictly talking about the best player, I'd have to say Jagr.
Look at him, he's already MIGHT be the best player right now, shoulder to
shoulder with #66. To say he's not a leader is not fair, it's still
Lemieux's team right now. Lindros is not a leader, he's a loser. If he
was such a leader, he would back up his words and beat the Panties.
Leaders step up in the playoffs, like Lemieux, Stevie Y, and Joe Sakic,
not Forsberg. Forsberg totally disappeard last round against the Hawks.

Jaromir Jagr will be known as the greatest hockey player ever in 10 or so
years. I can see it in him. He has the power and the will to do great
things. And he was taught by the other greatest player in the world,
SuperMario. Together they can rule the hockey world.

Searched for this thread and was very happy to find that it’s still available. Seems like with the move to the new server a lot of old threads are still missing. :(

where were these discussions located during the 80's/early 90's,

I had no idea such a thing existed.

Nobody that I knew discussed anything like the internet growing up during the 80's. My biggest concern on the computer was plaing Bard's Tale on the Tandy desktop.

Bard's Tale was the best (Apple IIGS here) - and it came out right after I'd finally beaten Wizardry.
