Jeff Gorton negotiates the contracts. Before Gorton was elevated to AGM in 2011,Cam Hope negotiated the entry level contracts. Those contracts are basic contracts. Just follow the entry level system rules. Glen Sather negotiated the big ones. Gorton negotiates the contracts now. Hope left at the end of June 2011. Even with the Kristo trade. Gorton and Clark along with of the the scouts(Larry Bernard) wanted Kristo. Sather has never seen him play. Not even on TV. North Dakota is on TV every weekend.

Kristo was a top College player for 4 years !

Even for a very busy GM, Slats never watched ONE North Dakota game ??

I've worked in the theatrical film biz for years, even the bosses see other competitors movies - for free, whenever they want. And they do, gotta know your competitors, which also gives you better idea of the market as a whole.

I thought Pro scouting was no different, but I'm always shocked when I read NHL brass not taking any time to study up on some well known prospects/players.

Regarding Sather, I keep thinking of the scene in "Office Space" when the consultants come in:

"So what is it exactly that you do here?"

I'm inclined to think what Sather said was a bit of hyperbole. I mean, obviously any scouting he does himself is on the professional level, but Kristo played on a line with two of his prospects at the WJC. So maybe he wasnt watching Kristo intently, but he's definitely seen him.

Maybe. Ive never seen anyone use hyperbole to highlight how they are doing a worse job than they really are.

Updated roster

Stepan gets 3,5M to 4M on a 4-5 year deal. Or a bit less on a bridge deal (compare to the DuSchene contract I would think)
Hagelin gets 1,8-2M on a 2 year bridge deal
Falk and Mashinter will get close to their qualifying offers
The only question that remains is Zuccarello...

* - includes bonus money in contract
ELC - denotes player on Entry Level Contract
NTC - denotes No Trade Clause in Contract
NMC - denotes No Movement Clause in Contract

2014 Draft picks
  • 1st round NYR
  • 2nd round NYR
  • 3rd round NYR
  • 4th round NYR
  • 5th round Florida (for Casey Wellman)
  • 6th round NYR
  • 7th round NYR*

  • NO 5th rounder NYR traded to San Jose for Ryan Clowe in 2013 - conditions being if he does not resign with NYR - then San Jose gets the 5th pick.
  • Eventually NO 7th rounder (conditionally traded to San Jose along with Tommy "horror-movie" Grant for Brandon Mashinter 2013 - condition being if he resigns with NYR then San Jose gets the pick). B. Mashinter has now been qualified - likely meaning this pick is going to San José

WOW. This is a fantastic deal/steal for the Rangers. IMO this is one of the best cap hits in the league. No way had I ever thought that McD would re-up for anything less than $5,5+M on a long term deal.

Definite steal. 4.7 per for a defenseman that will play around 30 minutes per game and put up 30+ points in a season, maybe more.

Maybe someone stole Brad's stapler!

Yeah, I just stare at the ice. but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after the first period, too. I'd say in a given game I probably only do about five minutes of real, actual, work.

I really dont understand why torts didnt use him on the PP. i know he got occasional shifts but nothing consistent like girardi got during this season. i really hope AV and arniel use him on the PP.

The only reason, which I agreed with, McDonagh didn't get PP time, is because he would play over 30 minutes every night in that case. McD always played after the PP was up. He was just too valuable at ES to make additional PP minutes.

Let me just throw this out there, maybe, and i mean maybe we throw in a partial NTC. Would that motivate you?

Different for Sather. Usually it's one rate for RFA years and another for UFA years. See Staal, Girardi, Dubinsky, Callahan.
