Are you sure about those rules? I'm pretty sure it depends on where you played when you were drafted. If you played in the CHL, you have to abide by the CHL/NHL agreement. But if you were playing in Europe and moved to the CHL the season after being drafted, you can still move the AHL, despite being under 20. Maybe they changed it with the new CBA, but these are rules I'm familiar with.

I'm pretty sure it depends on rights being owned or not - not where players are drafted from.

That is why sometimes a CHL team will take a chance and draft a top european prospect in the CHL-Import-draft, even though the player has expressed no desire to play junior hockey.

When the player is then drafted to the NHL, the CHL team which drafted him in the Import-draft might get lucky, that the NHL team signs the player and sends them down to the junior team.

Also, because CHL teams can only have two import players, they might actually release a players rights in order to bring in someone else. In that case, the player who's rights are released can play in the AHL even though he is under 20.

I don't think that is correct. I'll refer to this sticky thread from the AHL subforum. Which clarifies that the CHL/NJL agreement doesn't cover european players if they are drafted out of Europe, even if they later play in the CHL.

Ehlers will play his next game tonight for Halifax, so will be interesting to see if Halifax can make a comeback and Ehlers back in production.

Here is Top Shelf Prospect's scouting report on Nikolaj Ehlers. Ehlers could certainly be the highest Danish NHL draft pick since Lars Eller. He has put up excellent points this year for the Mooseheads that will be hard to ignore for many NHL teams. Top Shelf considers Ehler to be the eight best prospect in the draft.

Here is the full report: http://lastwordonsports.com/2014/04/09/2014-nhl-draft-profile-8-nikolaj-ehlers/

Bødker was higher the year after! But exciting to see when and where the kid goes!

Bødker was 8'th, Eller was 13'th and N. Jensen 29'th.
It seems many have Ehlers around 6-10, so it will be a close race with Bødker, though his lack of size could make him fall to around 11-12, but very unlikely worse than Eller.

The Halifax playoff will be critical. Last game he was without points and if Halifax goes out 0-4 with very few or no more Ehlers points - maybe around Eller is likely.
If he and Halifax bounces back then Bødker's record is in danger.

But it's amazing that Denmark will have 4 1'st round drafted players in 7 years.
Hope it wont be the famous 7 fat years followed by 7 lean years.

I basically only know about out upcoming players from the prospect thread, but it doesn't seem like we will have terribly lean years....

But it really is amazing the kind of talent we have produced.

Oh, my new fantasy is having the Islanders (I think they have the 5th or 6th pick...could be wrong) reach a little and get Nikolaj, making him the highest drafted player and get two danes on the islanders.

Found this twit from earlier this month.
Tallon is the Florida gm

John Moore ‏@rinkrant 3h
Tallon on Ehlers “great entertainment value, explosive & not afraid to go in tall trees. Don’t think there is a better skater in draft.”
John Moore ‏@rinkrant 3h
Asked if @FlaPanthers would take Ehlers in top 5, Tallon replies “Why not? He reminds me of Patrick Kane & we took a chance with him.”

Nikolaj Ehlers with 2A in a Halifax overtime win 6-5 over Val-d'Or.
So their offense got going, but Fucale only got 3.28 min after letting in 3 goals in 4 shots !!!
He has really been awful these three matches, whereas Darveau saved 26 out of 28 in the rest of the match.
Ehlers has 23 points (9G 14A) and joint second in QMJHL
Halifax behind 1-2 in series

Patrick Bjørkstrand got 2G and Portland got a 4-3 OT win against Kelowna.
He now leads the WHL playoffs in points with 24 (14G 10A).
Portland leads series 2-1

Edmonton lost 1-2 to Medicine Hat.
No points for Mads Eller.
Edmonton leads series 2-1

Fourth games on the series in QMJHL and WHL:

Halifax changed to Darveau in goal from start and they won 5-4 over Val-d'OR.
Ehlers had 1G. (10G 14A in all, now dropped to 3'rd on the production list) while Drouin had a massive 2G 3A.
Series is 2-2.

Portland got a 5-1 win over Kelowna.
O. Bjørkstrand had 1G (15G 10A in all, tied first in WHL with teammate Leipsic)
Series is 3-1 for Portland

Edmonton won 4-1 over Medicine Hat
Mads Eller had no points.
Series 3-1 for Edmonton

Halifax will play tonight. So interesting to see if Ehlers can start to increase his production, that has fallen to around 1PPG in the series vs Val-d'Or

In the WHL Portland Winterhawks kept outscoring Kelowna and won 7-3 winning the series 4-1.
This game Bjørkstrand didn't scores but got 3A (15G 13A in 14 games, so 2PPG).

Edmonton also plays tonight.

Halifax managed to win yet another close game over Val-d'Or. 4-3 OT (shots 42-25).
Nikolaj Ehlers with only 1A (so still only 1PPG this series and 10G 15A in 14 games).
Fucale yet again in goal - not that convincing.

Halifax leads series 3-2.

Edmonton secure the win of their series with a 4-3 win over Medicine Hat (shots 52-19 !).
Mads Eller got 1G (2G 6A in 14 games) .
Edmonton wins series 4-1.

So Danish duel in WHL with finals between Portland and Edmonton !!!

And this means we'll see at least one Dane at the Memorial Cup. Has this happened before?

Bødker played in it before he was drafted. But let's go for two with Ehlers! That hasn't happened! (I think)

Yet another single point (1A) for Nikolaj Ehlers, when Halifax lost 5-7 to Val-d'Or [Shots 43-32].
So 3-3 in series and a seventh and final game tonight.
Fucale was yet again insecure in goal (17 saves out of 22) and Darveau didn't do any better (8 saves out of 10).

For Halifax to win this they need a goalie to step up and Ehlers to produce multiple points again.

Yeah, Ehlers seems to have a hard time with Val-d'or for some reason. Have watched 2 of the games so I can only speak of so much.

Fucale is dropping fast as a rated prospect, that's for sure!

And to Bagge, don't apologize, I was just pointing it out :)

Halifax is out after losing 2-3 to Val-d'Or in spite of outshooting them 41-16 ! Yet Again not very impressive of Fucale.
Nikolaj Ehlers had 1G 1A, so a bit better but not enough.

That has to be a bummer.. They outshot them time and time again, yet Fucale let in goals in spades on few shots.

Nikolaj Ehlers was drafted 9'th by the Winnipeg Jets.
He didn't manage to beat Bødker's Danish draft record of 8'th. Probably only due to his lack of size.
So 4'th Danish player drafted in the first round, which really is hugely impressive compared to our situation 20-30 years ago.
