Lotta that was Niemelainen and Desharnais. Dunno if either of them completed a pass tonight.
I hope to GOD that Broberg takes a step this year because Desharnais isn't it. Gleason looked 100x better than Desharnais did tonight.

Did any of the guys fighting for spots show up?
Gleason looked really good tonight. I know you said fighting for spots but Brown looked fantastic imo

Well Desharnais is what he is, and it isn't poised speedy puck moving dman. Nemo and him do have the ability to really crunch guys down low however. Desharnais is capable on the PK as well.

Desharnais had a couple of Desharnais give-aways in his own zone. Didn't get burnt on any but there was one (picked up by the Nucks broadcast) where he spun like a laundry cycle about 3 times before Skinner eventually covered the puck.

It's preseason, shake out the cob webs, etc. And he's also our 6/7th dman, but damn.

(He PK'd fine. He's nearly a PK specialist at this point. He offers truly little on 5v5 offensively and defensively...)

Nah, Nurse/Bouchard were both noticeably off at times, throwing pucks away and skating themselves into dead ends. Well, Nurse always does that, even when he's playing well, but Bouchard definitely looked like he was consistently off target on his passes when he was trying to make plays under pressure.

Well except for that one ;)

I don't know know man. This team severely lacks a high IQ and dynamic good skating puck moving defenseman. The defense is definitely a weak spot. Makes the team look slow. Which is saying something considering the Oilers have fast forwards.

Defense will do this team in if anything. Still a sore spot.

I'd rather have a solid 2 way Dman instead of a PK specialist that provides nothing else. A Kulak type dman

We have good skating dmen and a few of them can pass as well. The IQ part is debatable. I'll reserve judgement until we can see all of D together in a meaningful game.

Absolutely. Carson Soucy was great on their end in that role too.

Fingers crossed Cody Ceci's in that role with Kulak on the bottom pairing as we've found an in or out of house upgrade for the second pairing.

Most of the team looked off Which wasn’t surprising. A lot of players were quiet tonight. Kane also has not looked very good since coming back from his wrist injury. Hopefully he can find his form from before. We will see.

So obviously or not? None of Broberg NemO Desi are fit for duty right now for the third pair?
You now want a 6 mill third pair?

Think Ceci revives his game paired with Ekholm playing 18-19 mins per game.

Vancouver fan coming in peace. I was at the arena. At the end of the game, some fans were booing Skinner. During his interview. It was kinda quiet. I bet it could have been heard at ice level. Why ?

It's pre-season after all...

but I thought there would be more jump and a bit more cohesive play with a camp that's largely kept its regular season lines together through drills and practices. McDavid led with his high tempo game. Skinner was dialled in. Pretty ragged after that. Brown had good pace early then felt he faded (not unexpected). 4th line centre guys, Sutter top minutes and 53% in the dot; Pederson 50%; Ryan 20%.

Tons of ticky tack penalties. But 6 penalties is not good. Sloppy PP. Got a W against a B Canuckle lineup. But this is all about evaluation of end of roster competition and call-up options.

Initially I was wondering why the hell there's 8 games' worth of pre-season, but after that... They frankly need the reps and working on their play will take at least all of it and may spill over into a poor season start.

8 pre-season is way too many. This is a largely intact lineup wanting to take a run at a Cup. Personally I think they could dial it with five exhibition games and continue to utilize camping time to embed goal suppression systems and work ethos. 8 is a money grab.

... what?! Haha I don't follow your questions, as I don't think I was accusing any of those guys of not having that ability. Sorry to you, I guess, if that's what you felt. My thought was that either Broberg steps into a second pairing role by mid season or we trade for someone on our second pairing by/at the deadline.

Soucy was good in their Kulak-like role. He's a kind of player I hope Desharnais could be?
--
Yeah... I mean, I hope Ceci gets there too. It'll be good for the tea.
