I think it's more a sign of how the NHL's middle class is getting squeezed by new team building strategies. Basically these young players who aren't star players and look to be role players aren't worth healthy raises anymore.

Lemieux was offloaded by the Sabres, Jets and Rangers org's, and now LAK don't see him as worthy of a QO. If LAK don't re-sign him to a minimum wage deal, it becomes pretty clear that there's something wrong with the guy. Added to any possible character issues, there isn't much of a justification for a high salary for bottom-6 players that don't PP or PK, and routinely do dumb shit and get suspended.

Frank Serravelli said that the Kings may circle back on Lemieux like Arizona did with Fischer.
