Okay and then what? Because of that You give him the top 6 contract and play him over kids ? Adam Lowry also shutdown lines with bottom 6 plugs and has some offensive skills and he's paid 3.25m a year.

It's cool that we beat Toronto and we all know that Toronto choked let's all be honest for 1 second.
Danault is not the reason why Toronto lost and not the main reason why Matthews and Marner choked. It's been the same thing for the last 4 playoffs with them.

If you really wanna give a huge contract to a guy like Danault then don't be suprised in a normal season we end up 11-12th in the east.

Don't forget we just ended a season 24-32. Le't not overhype this roster , you gotta be careful. We already made a terrible move by not trading up Tatar at this deadline and extending Gallagher that much.

Danault is an overprice 3rd center for a team that is close to a cup , which Montreal is not even close even if they beat Winnipeg.

for a guy that shuts down lines, it’s unfortunate the jets didn’t use him against McDavid-Drai in playoffs

I’d like Danault back.

He can help us win.

with 2 younGs C (KK+ Suzuki), he is the perfect stop gap

The best would be a low cap hit.

Then, Danault will ask for lots of years which is fine.

So, I think a realistic contract could be 7 years *4,5m$ for a total of 31,5m$.

Bergy did it with Gallagher (6years) and Anderson (7 years)

At 5v5 Pageau hovers around 1.30 points per 60 minutes. Danault averages over 2 points per 60 in the last seasons. Even if you factor out Gallagher and consider an added value for goals, Danault is a significantly more productive player.

While being a better shutdown center.

Danault would be worth more without the flat cap in the open market (maybe 5.5 to 5.75 range?). I think now 5 is reasonable.

...and stats are absolutely meaningless without any context given with them...Danault has been attached at the hip with Montreal's two most productive wingers for years and has still under-produced when compared to those other #1C's (and yes, Phil was our #1C during those years)...so why not bring up a contract for a similar player that was signed during the flat cap and not before??...like Lowry, another great defensive #3C who had just as many points as Danault while playing with lesser linemates and received the exact same assignments as Phil did??...

I will say this.

The fact that both Mackinnon and Matthews have gone well out of their way to compliment Phil and call him underrated says something. In the same way that Price getting votes from the NHLPA says something.

Not that I thought he was a scrub, but maybe I haven't been giving him enough credit for specifically his 5v5 match up ability.

Not sure what you mean by exact same assignments considering Mark Schiffle had the primary matchup with all 1Cs in the North and not Lowry. TOI available on Statrick. So no, not the exact same assignments.

Also, mentioned before.... prior to this year, where they were basically even in points, Lowry's best season at point per game pace was equivalent to Danault's worst in Montreal starting at his full 82 game season in 2016.

to take into consideration

You have an entire roster to shutdown the only 2 players that made Edmonton a playoff team. When you ice Chiasson on the powerplay , you know u have shit wingers.

Also Winnipeg has a better goalie better top and depth than Toronto.
The huge weakness of Winnipeg is that shit def like ours.

But you laughing at the other post. I will be laughing the day he gets his big payroll with us then you will wonder where we dont score goals in the next 5 years.

Why would they?

Best way to shut down McDavid/Draisaitl...is to make them defend.

They don't need to use Lowry vs then for 20 mins a game...they have 2 top 6 lines for that and a goalie they trust whose more then capable.

So don't come in here with "defensive specialist" shutdown centre Lowry when he doesnt even get the hardest matchups on your team. Seems dishonest, that's all.

Man 7 years is a lot, but I also think he is a good stop gap for the next couple years until our kids get into their best years for us.

Money is gunna be everything with Danault

The thing I wonder is does Danault want a long term contract. How important is it for him to get a 5-7 year long term contract.

When looking at average salary, term always has to be taken into account. More now with a flat cap for the foreseeable future. Like I posted previously, teams just aren’t handing a lot of those out now to forwards.

What 3 wins does to people's evaluations. We lose in 5, Danault is gone. Bye. Don't look back. We win 3 games against a Leafs team, that's it, extension....geez....à

I guess we will revise this when we lose badly against the Jets? Is that it? Fine. Let's revisit this thread shall we?

Keeping Danault is playing not to lose. And not to win. People should wake up and realize that this team is going back to the conference next year. And if you think overusing Danault will make you even make the playoffs, you are deluded. Please note that we didn't make the playoffs with him before. We would not have made it last year. And with this year's conference, we would not have made it either. With the same Danault.

But...we win 3 games and that's it Danault, Danault for life....

And stop with Danault the stop gap. Danault is not the stop gap. Danault is the life jacket for any coach. You will ALWAYS go back to this to avoid being too wet. Always. You keep Danault, he'll still get top minutes next year. And the year after....
