They're trying to add new wrinkles in the PP. The Caps have been too predictable lately and one flaw in the Caps PP is that the left side is underutilized. There's no one on the left side except Ovechkin on his island. Backstrom moved quite a bit on that PP. It helps we have another guy who is a really good passer and PPQB

Backstrom is likely playing that spot because they need their most reliable puck carrier to be the safety net for either wing, should they be pressured.
