Scandella blew that one, he left good ice for bad to go after a player with a poor shooting angle and left his man all alone in the slot
While you're right about Scandella leaving his spot to chase Malkin, none of that happens if Perunovich doesn't try (and predictably fail) to prevent the entry into the zone. Once that happened, Malkin had the entire side to himself; Scandella had to decide whether to contest it or let him go 1-on-1 against Hofer.

It's why as good as Perunovich might be able to be offensively it doesn't matter because his defense is terrible. As in, "he'd look right at home on the Maple Leafs blueline" terrible.

Is the dead cat bounce complete? If not for Thomas the offense de would be non-existent. Can’t imagine they can stay in the playoff hunt much longer…
