In today's salary capped NHL, inexpensive depth players are still very much in demand. Daniel Cleary with Detroit is living proof of highly touted junior prospects hanging onto their careers and eventually becoming key contributors. That does happen occasionally and a smart team can pick up a player who made all his mistakes with other teams and blossom eventually. Brendl does have a great deal of proven offensive skill, however, the problem has always been coaxing anything like a work ethic, desire, coachability or personal accountability to his fellow team mates out of his game. Theoretically Pavel Brendl should have quite a bit of hockey left in him and with the right environment, salary and management expectations still prove to be an asset to a team wanting a low cost risk. If he wants an NHL job badly enough he can probably earn one.
